This isn't a bank or on land though, this is international water. And if you would make 'weapons illegal' on international water, then you would literally have to somehow enforce that not a single navy leaves their coast... with no guns. International waters is complicated because international law is complicated. It's deeply entrenched into politics. While yes, something is very obvious... the fact that everyone is behaving civilly on both sides of this conflict (pirates tending to not execute prisoners, and upholding their end of the ransom, and navy's not just shooting anyone who is suspicious) means that the most important folks, the sailors who are just trying to trade. Are usually the ones who have a very high chance of surviving a capture in the first place. Honestly, I would prefer if there was an international shipping security company. Put guns on every cargo vessel and you don't have to worry about pirates but that's just me.

I find it appalling when officials or other people in a position of authority justify severe criminal behavior as "desperation". The video itself said some the pirates have made their wealth through kidnapping. At what point does "desperation" finally transition into criminality?

The Somali pirate problem is complex! But it is possible for the nations of the region to solve it. If they actually wanted to do so they could patrol the waters off of Somalia and stop the illegal fishing. Then they could help to stabilize the government of Somalia and assist them in obtaining the navel resources that Somalia needs to protect its waters. How ever there is absolutely no way that any of that is going to happen. To many of the region’s nations are only one step above the level of barbarians and would not consider helping the Somalians or any one else. That leaves the only option left. Armed intervention. A coastal zone of operation inside Somalia would be seized by a coalition of UN member nations. Patrols would be established and all boats of any kind from Somalia that are more than 3 miles off shore would intercepted and searched. Any ship with the means of conducting piracy would be destroyed. The crews would be arrested and be taken back to the coalition zone for trial. Inside of the coalition zone a prison would be built and that is where the trials and the resulting sentences would carried out. For security purposes no access to the coalition zone would be granted to any one but coalition personnel and the lawyers of the pirates. No one and I do mean no one from any nation not a member of the coalition would be employed inside the coalition zone. No local laborers no mechanics no janitorial workers no local help of any kind. All of this would be incredibly expensive and it absolutely would never be allowed to take place. To much cooperation would be needed and it would be too costly in political capital. This will come down to arming the ships transiting the area.

there is a regulation at sea...if they train and arm the crew ..other country can view it as act of war and the vessel can be consider as war vessel...bring a ship full of train man with AK near US coast and the ship will go out in flame,other country can do it too... the second best thing they could do is this...make a coalition and patroling the area so that they can response to the piracy call quickly but still they cannot just bring an entire fleet of warship into other people coast.

@@MagiCaster001 Wrong attitude! AS you saw, patrolling the area will cost more than the ransoms the pirates demand. If every ship was licenced to carry weapons then that would not be an act of war. It would only be a defence mechanism against the pirates and the captain and some crew simply need to be trained in defence strategies and not murder. As you also saw in this pathetic video, there are so many on the legal side getting very rich out of this that do not want it to end and the head of the Law firm was happy to admit this. He is nothing more than a legal pirate on land or scum sucker. Armed vessels would make the worst or the pirates think twice. The ships are fitted with radar, so they can see them approaching. One or two high powered guns shooting near them a km out would in most cases turn them back. If not then a warning shot in the middle of the boat certainly would. The word of armed ships would travel quickly throughout the pirates organization. It has nothing to do with the lack of fishing! It is now a way of life, a career. If they can take out Osama-Bin-Laden then they can certainly take out the leaders of these pirates. Hard to steer a car with out the steering wheel.

I'm retired Navy and spent 11 months in Djibouti in 2011. I met some of the most amazing people in my life while stationed there. Most Americans could never imagine the poverty and lack of opportunity there. My deployment in Djibouti opened my eyes to many of my bias and opinions in life. First of all, the US news media feeding me anti Muslim propaganda was removed after serving there and interacting with the people. The Muslim population there is Awesome to say the least. Thay spoke of respect for mother and father above all else and I was very moved by that. The friends that I met all spoke at least three languages fluently. Samalia is a close neighbor with even worse opportunities in life. I'm in no way condoning piracy or violence but my heart goes out to people of countries with no chance in life from birth. I was blessed to be born into an easy life in America and I thank God that he gave me the opportunity to see the realities of the rest of the world. I miss my friends in Africa and pray for their future.

@Dri Ven both sides are pirates, weather they are dumping or attacking commercial shipping. This whole situation requires a stable Somali government to restore order and protect national sovereignty. To create opportunities for people to work and to stop illegal dumping and fishing by foreigners. Yet sadly the possibility of any such government is years away. So the national security forces must be harder on both sides here. Handing out food encourages further piracy, and given the unstable environment and potential resources to gain. The coastline of Somalia is larger than the entire North Sea, the government does not have the funds nor the capacity to control every mile. This documentary is pretty old and in 2018-2024 there has been only a few attacks compared to the hundreds that were happening 2006-2018. Recently the Somali government signed a deal with the Turkish government which will patrol and they’ve allowed permits for oil exploration which has amazing potential in the region. Somalia has the 8th largest oil reserves in the world.

@@rutiponce8377 The root cause of depleted fish stocks hasn't been addressed in the documentary. One main problem stems from the Somalia government selling the commercial fishing rights to foreign nations for foreign currency. Massive factory fishing vessels supported by other vessels operate in their Exclusive Economic Zone (200 nautical mile limit out to sea), maybe for only a few weeks a year, but their nets scoop up everything leaving very few fish breeding stock for next year. Also population growth at over six babies per woman is driving increasing demand. The problem is more political and tribal and that needs fixing first.

Simple solution...AC 130 Gunship squadron patrolling the straights... AC-130 gunship is a devastating display of force and firepower. Through the years, the aircraft has been equipped with an array of side-fired canons, howitzers, mini-guns, wing-mounted missiles and bombs, and laser guided-missiles launched from the rear cargo door, earning it the moniker the “Angel of Death.” The primary missions of the gunship are close air support, air interdiction, and armed reconnaissance. The heavily armed aircraft is outfitted with sophisticated sensor, navigation, and fire control systems, allowing it to track and target multiple targets using multiple munitions with surgical precision. Another strength of the gunship is the ability to loiter in the air for extended periods of time, providing aerial protection at night and during adverse weather. The AC-130 relies heavily on visual targeting at low altitudes and punishes enemy targets while performing pylon turns around a fixed point on the ground during attack. The Air Force is the only operator of the AC-130 and the gunship has been providing close air support for special operators for the last 50 years.

I'm a former senior Navy officer (also worked with EU and NATO). Please allow me some purely personal considerations. 1. Can feel the frustration about inability to perform anything decisive against piracy. Please know most if not all military people involved are even less happy than viewers have commented so far. 2. Glad the Norwegians joined forces with EU. But then, they had to respect the Rules of Engagement for said operation, which come from EU politicians: when they have to treat "probable pirates" as if were distressed people at sea (so, refurbishing them and making sure they were able to reach a safe port) it is because dictated by those rules. 3. Rules of Engagement are conceived so to respect International treaties. Prominent among them is the International Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Nobody can be called a "pirate" without having been traced to committing a crime at sea; safety is paramount and all able are obliged to provide support to those declaring to be in danger. 4. Perhaps then somebody may object how Russians (and Chinese, and few others) instead treat "somalis-with-arms-at-sea" as pirates. Just consider the former point about respecting treaties. 5. About carrying arms. There is no prohibition about having arms aboard commercial ships in international waters. There are prohibitions issued by single countries about their territorial waters and ports. We can't blame shipping companies for respecting those prohibitions. A political effort could be done about having countries agree to allow at least defensive weapons aboard foreign ships, but clearly this would have to work in reverse too, e.g. allowing ships by any flag to enter european harbours with firearms. 6. Not depicted in this movie (however very good and interesting) but this can be easily found elsewhere. These ill-fed former fishermen now pirates are living in a failed country under the heel of a local warlord. The warlord generally allows them and their families to live as long as they catch valuable prey. Most if not all the ransom money (and valuables found aboard ships) goes to the warlord. Of course that is money used (among else) to buy more weapons for the warlord militia, then used to keep the population subjugated. 7. Who gains? The warlords for sure, then those shipping insurance and security agencies that do business based on the threat of piracy. 8. Who loses? Shipping companies have to raise prices to go even with insurance, security, increased risk wages, detours. Increased shipping prices are ultimately paid by the final customers: that means we, including all in the EU and elsewhere who are glad about point 3. Also, tax-payers are those ultimately paying for the huge costs of EU Operation Atalanta. 9. It could be possible to eradicate the piracy problem if the warlords (point 6) were dealt with, not just those former fishermen. But nobody in the western world wants to, as it would require a full-swing military campaign in hostile territory against militias pretty well armed and easily disguising among the local population. 10. There is then no solution? Actually something else may be tried. One possibility would be to sail a bait ship, with military people defending, acting as if was an easy prey: once attacked by pirates, would have all rights to sink or capture them. Another possibility would be to keep constant aerial/space surveillance, so to trace all targets since they detach from the somali coastline; then issue shipping warnings to avoid these tracks, or otherwise have military company. Also, any track maneuvering so to close distance with commercial ships has to be considered suspect, therefore stopped and searched for weapons. Ultimately, the UN should agree to amend UNCLOS, so that any vessel carrying weapons far exceeding their defensive needs, also withour valid reason to have them, should be seized and occupants detained. Finally, countries (as Kenya) where pirates are detained and prosecuted need be better assisted and funded to at least get even all trouble considered.

Personally I think that the crews of merchant vessels should be allowed to carry fire arms for self defence, or to employ security personnel for protection in international waters, let’s face it, the Navy’s of many countries operate Naval war ships in the region but are completely outnumbered by the merchant vessels and the amount of waters they have responsibility for, there are probably more pirates and their vessels as well, and even when caught the authorities have limited options for legally dealing with the pirates, so the ships Captains and crews should have the right for self defence. P.S Why are countries like Somalia so impoverished?, in my opinion it’s down to corruption, greed, mismanagement and biting the hands that feed it, civil war, criminal politics, criminal warlords and when aid workers and peacekeeping forces are deployed they are not welcome and attacked, murdered, and eventually forced to leave, they want aid, usually in the form of money, but don’t want the people who provide it to see it being corruptly dispersed or used to buy weapons instead of food for their people. Of course it was the fault of the “foreigners”, as the narrator blatantly told us, and the Somali human rights chap tried to make their acts of piracy seem their only choice, but how come the narration also said, the pirate leader had become very rich, so if he’s very rich why is he still hijacking vessels and taking what isn’t his, a criminal is a criminal no matter the circumstances, perhaps if they hadn’t kick the colonial powers out they might not have been in the sorry state they are in.

@HansWurst-gm2rx
@HansWurst-gm2rx 2 жыл бұрын
I dont think a handgun would make any difference. In order to deter these pirates i would even go so far and say assault rifles are not enough. You would need machine guns and some sort of mounting spots for those, where they could be deployed while the gunner has somehow good cover. And even that would be risky, because the pirates can respond with assault rifles, RPGs and drive near your vessel an throw up grenades. I think machine guns are the best possible low cost deterent for freighter vessels.

You drop one or two of those into a boat with several 55 gallon drums of fuel and watch the fireworks. The Russian Navy got real "lucky" on one of their stops. They held the crew on board while they searched the boat and hid a radio tracker onboard the skiff. When the skiff was out of visual range the signal stopped. The Navy went to investigate and all they found was an oil slick. I guess the pirates accidently blew themselves up. HA HA HA

If it's legal for the pirates to have guns on open seas, (and they are out there with the intention of committing crimes), then it should be equally legal for the cargo ships to be armed too.. Blast audio warnings to any suspicious looking approaching vessels, then let the bullets do the talking.. A few well armed, well trained Mercs on each ship for a few days as they traverse that section of ocean would be much cheaper than the hundreds of thousands the insurance company charges.. The bonus would be the occasional reduction in the number of pirates, when their boats mysteriously sink.. No crime if there's no evidence.

Many years ago when working in the private security industry, I had considered what sort of security detail you'd need to protect a large vessel like this. Ideally, you would want 4 key positions. One at both Starboard and Port, and one each at Bow and Stern. Preferably close to each corner, allowing for a wider view angle and some overlap. Have a 2nd four man team that swaps shifts with them every 4-5 hours, if shifts are longer, people become mentally fatigued. In 4-5 hours people can still eat some grub, have a quick wash, and a few hours nap, fresh again for another short sentinel shift. Each key position should offer the best angle of Field Of View, and have multiple sandbag areas along those key positions, for security team to take cover behind between movement and supression fire. Ideally each guard would have both a primary and secondary weapon, preferably a 9mm para sidearm, and a subcompact like the HK MP5, which again uses a 9mm parabellum round. These types of round will be highly effective in close quarters, should any pirates make it onboard, but the type of rounds they are, have less chance of penetrating through ships walls/floors etc (for safety/risk mitigation). Main sandbagged vantage point at each corner should also have a heavy gun preferably 7.62mm long, with a large capacity feed and modest rate of fire. All security would have to do is then use short bursts of heavy weapon supressive fire when sea vessels approach with intent. Most pirates would probably peel off at that point, leaving only the most desperate of punters to continue and try board. If that's the case, you then know exactly who your dealing with, because when they're THAT desperate to risk that firepower to still take your vessel, then they're desperate enough to try anything.
