Signals Music Studio Hi, Jake: Why do you say at 12:55 that to harmonize with A Major, you have to skip up to C SHARP and not just C? Is it because, in order to harmonize, you have to move up (and/or down?) 2 full steps (4 frets) either way, up or down the fretboard?? Thanks for all that you do for us! :-) OR: is a Major 3rd 4 frets? and that's the interval of harmonies???
@IrisBomber6 жыл бұрын
Alan Burch Because in A major the 3rd is a major 3rd-C#, in A minor it would be a C instead

Thanks! I'm still not sure what skill level to make these videos for so I'm gonna try to spread it all out for a bit to see what people like, but I think I'm going to be really stressing the theory from now on.

Signals Music Studio very good! I think at least starting with the lower level stuff is great, im sure theres a bigger audience for that level, and also when you start teaching more advanced concepts, youll be able to link people back to your lower level videos. Either way man i think youre doing great, youre an awesome teacher, and ill be tuning in regardless.

Idk how to really ask this question so I hope it makes sense. What is happening when we take the 3rd position of a G major scale and play it where the 5th position once was? It is that what you just did? It’s a mode?

You, Fretjam, Carl Brown are gods. That's all I have to say.
@willlacy1125 жыл бұрын
Playing phrygian at the same time as ionian is like playing the note and its diatonic 3rd at the same time. So it's not a surprise that phrygian works here. Mixolydian would also work really well, because it would be the diatonic 5th of whatever you played in ionian

Hey dude, this is totally off topic but do you have any guitar with a floating bridge? If so could you give some advice? Some dude told me I should only get original Floyd rose because others just don't keep up and make your guitar go out of tune, but I know original Floyd rose bridges can get a little expensive. Do I really need one to get a quality bridge? Great video by the way.
@SignalsMusicStudio7 жыл бұрын
Depending on the style I want to play, I'd probably opt to get a regular floating bridge instead of a Floyd Rose just because of the hassle of a Floyd when it comes to changing strings and tuning. If you're worried about going out of tune while playing live, just get a tuning pedal, but at this point in my career I've just learned to accept that my instruments will never ever ever stay in tune :)

@@SignalsMusicStudio I have an 80's Japanese strat. I removed 2 of the 5 springs from the back. Took off the locking nut. Interesting effect, but probably not always desired or for everyone, I can hit an open E and the octave E on the A string, then bend the octave E up. The reduced tension from the removed springs causes the open E to drop, while the octave E goes up. Need to feel this move, so that a good harmony is achieved, but it's interesting, to me, since it sounds like each string has an independent whammy bar. And the old thing stays in tune through these. Somehow. Must be decent tuners. I also try to wrap the strings a lot, when putting them on. Idiosyncratic and makes the guitar hard to tune, for normal people. 🙃 Add: using 9's, but thinking I like 9.5's. Also thinking about putting the springs back in. Sometime. When I find them. Also: Removed locking nut is not part of the effect, just incidental. Long time ago. I think one of screws was stripped. Locking nut probably better, for anyone trying this at home. And: Removed springs 2 and 4, so 1,3,5 are left. Finally: only the lower, thicker, strings produce the effect significantly. Can still bend the higher, thinner, strings without noticeably dropping other strings. (I need to work on communicating more efficiently, as you do so well :)

How do I know what modes are "connectable", like the major/dorian example here?
@krovvyyarbles4 жыл бұрын
the previous one connects up to the next one. So the major is off the first scale degree, dorian is off the second scale degree, phrygian the third, lydian the fourth, mixolydian the fifth, aeolian (minor) the sixth, locrian the seventh.

I connect shapes the way you said but with the CAGED shapes. Kind of hard since the shapes sometimes have 2nps but it works as long as I don't try to go shred speed then it gets a little sloppy. Time to learn some 3nps shapes it seems lol
