How to Come Up with Drum Parts - Drum Lesson

Embarrassing question. ? What is the reason for counting in with the sticks before playing, say a rudiment or a groove. ie: 1234 then playing the beat or exercise. I Notice all drummers do this, even when playing a simple 1&3 on the kick 2&4 on the snare. You guys are so experienced you'd think that you'd be able to just play a beat without counting in before hand. I hope what I said makes sense So curious as to what's the theory behind it that is. I heard always count in before an exercise (kinda like new drummers should count out loud) I always felt stupid doing it because I'm not that great a drummer. A really bad habit I know. Any help would be appreciated
