is Clustered columnstore index appropriate for real time replication? I saw blogs on why you shouldn't use indexes on columns that gets updated frequently. could you explain in brief please?

Indexes help with data retrieval, but they slow down data writes. In a real-time replication scenario you have lots of write activity taking place. Each time you write new data, any indexes you have will need to be updated, thus impacting performance.

It’s due to the fact that Synapse Dedicated Pools stores data in columns vs rows and uses a column store index on the data which does not support the nvarchar data type.

No workarounds to my knowledge. Does your app support multiple languages and thus you need nvarchar, or can you get by with just using varchar?

@@DataBar I just tried, it mapped varchar to stings. Nothing was a nvarchar fortunately. But thanks buddy for your quick response. Appreciate it 👍 I am trying to move data from multiple azure SQL db dim tables to Synapse with CDC enabled. Still working on it. I chose copy data tool instead, which works little different, I should go with what you did instead.

Thanks for the video. I successfully linked my azure sql database to synapse but it's not replicating the table successfully, the status always says 'WaitingForSnaphot'. Can you please help?

nvarchar is not a supported data type?

That was at the time of this recording. nvarchar should be supported now as long as it’s not nvarchar(max) as LOB data over 1MB is unsupported.
