@@dunkinmonke1380 Very interesting response. However, I have to say that I've had more than a few hardasses whom I've worked for and - without exception - they went above and beyond right and sensible, as you say. Why? Because they were concerned about one thing and one thing only: their reputation. I've also worked for a few dumbasses and what I have to say about them is that each had no clue how to do their jobs well.

I pursued a career in law enforcement and was doing just fine for a little more than 3 years. That was until I realized the culture was not what is supposed to be. Good guys aren't actually the good guys. I decided to get the he'll outta there. Thankfully, I am no longer affected by the negativity any longer. God Bless all, especially those who are sharing some of my past negative experiences... 🙏❤😊

Josh Lopez:Some policemen are good. I have been trying to report crimes to the police for 12-15 years, been deceived and lied to by police.am quite harmed. Can it be that they cheat, lie, write bad reports (totally different than the style of my original real report), promise a real policeman, who knows how to talk to traumatized individuals but then give a bad one (who lacks skills and credibility) so I cannot talk with them - for the sake of keeping cases down + save money and resources? Or is there racism on white people? Ads feature blacks, although it is a small minority=not called for. Once I saw on 1 ad 8 other races people and 2 native white ones. In the sick-insurance office, I saw 18 healthy-looking , poshly dressed foreigners and only 2 Swedish-looking ones. And as I asked the official to sit down because weak and tired, I got a hateful response that felt really troubling and unsafe. Something bad is going on, we'd better investigate and take action before too late. The gender and HBTQ issues and Trump, - were they activated to keep us distracted from what worse, shady things are going on really? Hostility against whites, taking law-abiding citizen's home, good name, rights and money from them, what criminality is that in a european democracy? Deceiving a sick Aspergers and not only withholding them assistence and health care, but sabotaging their own efforts in self-care, breaking their health down and withholding information ?This is not acceptable! Please tell me what you know, will you? I am being treated as though having no rights or value, while heavy, bad criminals get really well, treated. How come, please? How do I stop it when incapacitated, made homeless, severely sick withheld help,, severely sleepless, fatally scared and unsure, unable to orient and plan, starving since they took my money!? Deadly danger where I searched help to start living.

Yes, it is like Jordan Peterson says, don't be harmless. Encounter and integrate your shadow, so that you can choose when and if to be nice or dangerous. Someone who can't be dangerous, who is nice and harmless, doesn't get respect and is not safe for abuse. Only the one who knows himself can be mature and adult. The ones who don't are the most dangerous ones, because they falsely believe they are good.

I think everyone should take a "use of force" course. The ones for civilians (mostly security guards) typically aren't as rigorous as the ones police go through, but they will teach you the basic methodology police employ when making decisions about the application of force. It's knowledge I wouldn't recommend anyone be arrested without, and since we might all be arrested...

@MrGbustamante

The scenario Jocko describes is what should occur in a normal perfect world with normal, smart, well trained officers who are fairly compensated. That exists NOWHERE. Cops are trained to react with extreme measures at the slightest little hint of resisting. Whether its verbal or physical. I have seen cops physically beat the hell out of someone who never raised a hand or touched him. This happens every day, even when the cops know they are being filmed. This means they KNOW they arent getting in trouble, and that their superiors have told them so. They are trained that its okay to use deadly force at any time they fear for THEIR OWN safety and that their TOP PRIORITY is to go home alive at the end of their shift. Maybe I am wrong but I thought the top priority of LEO was to protect and to serve and that it does require taking risks above and beyond being scared. I would think you take that responsibility when you decide to be an LEO and swear in. I guess its not that way anymore. The citizens have to suffer beatings and arrests for nonsense and then defend themselves while a cop sits on administrative duty getting paid and not being on the street. Yes, I know all cops are not this way, we have so many good cops. However the incidents prove the training and hiring practices are resulting in so many more incidents and the numbers and videos do not lie. I would never get involved verbally or physically because it would just make one of these poorly trained officers fly off the handle even more and result in me getting beat, arrested, maybe shot and definitely having to defend myself in court at great expense. I would just video it, and encourage everyone to video it and request to be a witness. Now if the perpetrator had a weapon or was being violent and was a true threat to the safety of others, then its game on.

Reasonably Compensated? I thought they do pretty well given all the down time, benefits, overtime opportunities. Sure, possibilities of emergency situations are there but I thought that's what the job is supposed to be. Majority of stories of officers never discharging their weapon during an entire career.

Imagine being so disconnected from personally dealing with the evils of police misconduct or brutality that you think you can actually approach an officer in the middle of beating someone to death and think you can deescalate this person with verbal commands or suggestions. The inability to grasp the reality of how bad police brutality situations truly are and how you cannot actually step in without outright risking escalating the situation further is an example of privilege. Having bounced in many clubs and bars over the course of just under a decade, I can tell you right now, you are downright lucky if you are ever able to deescalate a situation between two, untrained patrons that is already a physical one without you yourself getting physical to separate the two. This is virtually impossible to do as a citizen to a cop who is on a power trip and see themselves as an authority beyond reproach by us lowly peasants. Don't be so naive that you believe this
@brandonmartin1490
@brandonmartin1490 4 жыл бұрын
First, we all have access to a massive archive of vicious police beatings. I have the ability to imagine that its an awful experience without being their first hand. Stop flaunting your pseudo-enlightenment. You look like a massive tool using a serious topic as a conversational football to stroke your own self-righteous ego. You aren't adding any value. Second, Jocko's argument is for taking action that most effectively deescalate the situation while minimizing injury. Moreover, it's about setting the right example: taking action without becoming needlessly violent and not letting the irrationality of others dictate your response. There are some truly awful cops who want to inflict suffering and can't be reasoned with. They should be exposed and locked up. The other's don't and attempts should be made to reason with them, for their sake and ours. Don't be naive, but more importantly, don't be this guy.
@cgualandi30

@@brandonmartin1490 my comment was in no way about stroking my own ego. If we as a society pretend there isn't a serious police brutality, misconduct, and injustice issue in this country, the problem never gets fixed. I left my law enforcement job because I went to internal affairs about misconduct and brutality and corruption and they threatened people I love so they offered me the option to leave "amicably." Life isn't a fairy tale and it isn't as easy to address police injustice as people like you and jocko would have folks believe. A get example is what the founding fathers did when shit got to a point well before what we are experiencing now; they killed their oppressors and freed themselves from tyranny. THAT is a true example of fighting of how this country was founded. The red coats were the law enforcement of colonial times and the colonists and militia and continental army(all deemed traitors and terrorists by the crown) killed their oppressors when they had gone too far. The second amendment is for killing not just politicians, but cops too. The sooner you get that ugly fact through your ignorant, privileged skull, the sooner you will wake the fuck up.

Police forget about reasonable suspition and lack of evidence all the time before making arrests and then waste there time. The duty is on the police before using violence againest a civilian. That means police are using violence without casation thats misconduct. But whos going to stop them the people that are injuired and sue them in wrongful arrest cases. So compliance isnt all ways the best way forward its a strange situation . If the guy is inoccent a camera wont help but asking for the supervisor might help thats a form of accountablity.

I think everyone has either experienced abuse of authority (or at least witnessed it) at least once in their life before. I will admit I'm not always the most calm and collected guy ever and blatant extreme abuses of authority is one of the fastest ways to get my blood boiling. I wish this video was more about how to deal with say, an ignorant boss who is threatening to fire you for not doing something that might not only endanger your own life, but also the lives of other people. I've even heard of police being called on restaurant workers for demanding a paycheck that was being withheld from them. I wanted to know how to stand up to people who basically have the power to utterly ruin your life just because they can (and will) without going to jail. Like a government worker (not a cop) that's threatening to like, idk foreclose on you for not paying your taxes even though you ARE paying your taxes and then they screw you over anyway just because you interrupted them to point that out. But maybe the answer to all of these things is still fight it out in court first.

Hey Jocko I know this video doesn't pertain to what I need to ask but, I have a question about extreme ownership in regards to my nursing school. I am studying to be a nurse and with the transition to online clinical rotations I did the wrong simulation analysis. The problem was that under the same course content there were two documents titled simulation analysis and I chose the wrong one. Even though some of the questions were the same my professor awarded me a 0/70. She also contacted me and filled out a "conference form", some HR thing I don't understand, about the incident expecting me to sign it and return it to the president of the program. I do not feel a 0/70 is fair in this situation and wonder how I should take ownership and respond to the president of the program?

Perhaps I could help. I've been a Registered Nurse since 1987. Basically Nursing School is there to clear the weak from the Strong. Their job is to put people on probation which can lead to no graduation. I'm not sure what you have done since this question however if you still have a choice I would say don't sign anything you don't completely understand. That would tell this bully professor that as a nurse if you don't understand something you might react vs asking because this could harm you and as a nurse thinking without actually knowing could lead to a dangerous outcome to your patients. But if you had to figure this out quickly and sign this I would suggest writing a rebuttal and or your side of what happened and why you chose to comply and do so with respect , a desire for a good outcome, an opportunity for learning, to be a more professional nurse and send it certified to this professor and a letter to the Head of the Department. This is your career on the Line and your time and money. And sadly not your last of many vague encounters against your career. We have a saying" that nurses eat their young" actually after 33 years they will try to harm and set up each other at any age. Good Luck!

To be completely honest and clear, this is disturbing to me. The fact that someone else would have to or even has to "be the calm in the storm" because police officers are not equipped with deescalation technique is troubling to me and quite frightening. Furthermore, abuse of authority and the violation of civilian rights is rampant. It seems to me that it had always been that way ... The only difference is that its more documented now. Let's not forget about the possibility for "abuse of power & authority" that is done sneakily because an officer(s) consider themselves witty and play the role of the good guy because this is done often because they may think that you are uneducated and stupid just because you dont say anything and play the adsuming role as being the uneducated stupid individual.

There's been several times I've defended the police and deescalated the person they came for. And it ended in peace and everyone going about their way.. at least for that day. I am very serious about disrespectful language. I wasn't raised that way and chances are usually people know better. That is the first Flag that will generally escalate a shituation.

Diplomacy is difficult or EVERYONE would be doing it. Know (going in) that you're situating yourself in essentially a "two front war"... You don't know the history (if there is history to know) and you're going to have to step up from a "cold read" on both sides. Lots of times, it's enough. Sometimes, it's not... Sometimes it's going to do nothing but get YOU sucked into the middle of the mess. My brother and I (for one example) will fight like hell over dumb sh*t. BUT step between us at your peril... Regardless of who "has authority" at the time, both of us WILL turn on you. AND yes, I've had authority on certain situations, and he's had the authority in others... Whoever is experienced in the work holds the upper "level" of rank. BUT that certainly doesn't stop us from our brotherly arguing, bitching, and wailing at each other... it's just our way... abusive or not. An officer of some kind (regardless of agency or rank) may have authority... vested in him or her by the nature of training and experience to earn the uniform (and it IS earned). The best you can do is coach the "lesser ranked" into a more civil tone and even submission. Officers tend to be used to getting their way NOW... AND as my mom taught both us boys, "When an officer gives a command, the correct answer is 'yes, sir' and DO IT." IF there's an abuse of power in this instance, it doesn't negate that lesson. Follow the command first, and THEN you can "blow the whistle" and what-not. Better keeping your nose clean by doing your part than by flagrantly being insubordinate... Obviously, this doesn't carry to orders for things like murder and mayhem... BUT most of us (thankfully) won't face such moral dilemmas. Most of us won't face "life and death" as par for the course. THAT kind of question... well... you can only answer for yourself when you're there. Until then, the "I'd have...." does NOT matter. The speaker of such things is full of it. He or she won't (can't possibly) know what he or she would do until the proverbial boom falls. Pretend if you like, but in those moments, there's only "do" or "do not"... "Would've, Could've, and Should've got together and DIDN'T do a god damn thing." Karla... meanest bitch in the county ;o)

Come on Jocko.... You watch internet fights to study behavior , but you still mostly side with the law enforcement ? Either you are ignoring the truth , or you are naive which I don’t believe. I’m a Veteran myself, and I’ll admit there is a lot of abuse of authority going on these days. Especially in law enforcement in particular. It’s a dangerous mindset to think every person a officer uses force against is a criminal, real threat or deserves it for some reason.

I'd be better off having the breeds of dogs I love and want. Then breaking up and diffusing a violent situation. DO assertively explain HOW I feel. Ask the individual and police officer to please treat each other's feelings with respect and dignity. If that doesn't work or it is getting worse....take the wisest action I possibly can. Call 9-1-1 and ask for effective help to diffuse the situation.

Simple Fly I can understand that. Sadly, many Cops aren’t efficiently trained in serving or guarding the public. Some are naturally good at it, some not so much. There needs to be more training across the board. Also, many cops I see are physically weak. Fat, old, skinny, which leads to the over use of firearms.

Simple Fly Maybe. But you should avoid death so you can keep protecting the people you care about. Imagine a father telling his family he’ll protect them in a home invasion, but he doesn’t own a gun, is fat, drinks all the time, and doesn’t know how to fight. When the invasion does happen, he dies immediately because he wasn’t prepared. Is he a “real man” just because he died? Now his family is dead too.

Jocko Willink in light of recent events what is the best course of action when confronted by an obvious abuse of power authority resulting in personal injury due to an innocent person to an innocent person that occurs in ones presence at what point is it acceptable to physically engage with the assailant even though the assailant has some kind of authority sorry that's two questions wait wait whats the recent event ? Recent event is the person on the airplane getting dragged off and injured because it was overbooked and all that united yeah yeah overbooked flight so and ya know obviously I guess you could put more recent events is if you could have a police officer thats doing something you could have a bouncer ya know I'm sure you have plenty of stories about you knight club days besides he wearing jeans in the wrong area a big isle lation ? or adulation ? but sow sow here is here is my answer to this

The authority needs to be reminded that the abuse will inevitably incite an insurgency in this country so there are serious ramifications for acting like a cowboy. There are plenty of countries that would be more than happy to fund and supply any serious insurgency in the US. Check out the book "Homeland Siege" by H. John Poole. Violence always escalates and the retaliation against the authority could be like what happened in Oklahoma City or something worse. The authority figures are missing the big picture and that there are global players in the local game. The way to deal with a bad cop is to get witnesses and then contact the state bar of your state to get a referral to a civil rights attorney. The attorney will file a 1983 cause of action against the state officials (Bivens cause of action for Federal officials) in Federal court to get an injunction against the police officer, and the police department as well as punitive money damages which will get the officers involved fired since the department will not be able to get liability insurance with the bad cop otherwise. The system has a check that needs to be used to quell the growing insurgency.

After my incident I realized that the police have qualified immunity during war time the Constitution is watered down to keep us safe. Essentially we have lost every Right during the global shut down...we cannot gather, we can't speak freely, we can't have our guns, instead we are hoping that are Ordinances are helping by House Arrest and Bread lines yet today our governor assured us we had plenty of beds open with ventilators to help us live with daily new rights being taken from the American people who are not sick. I'm a Nurse Midwife since 1980 I know what normal is and what it is not. May I beg of everyone to pride yourself on the ability to not create crisis to not poke a sick animal with a stick and to calmly begin to question does anything make any sense. Bless you!🌏✌

I've experienced people with power who would abused and protect their fellow followers or flying monkeys of wrong doing. I've even fought the California courts and judges who clearly abuse their authority. I got the judge fired and this judge was a veteran in the army who was a officer. I've been rushed by cops and been almost shot because I was asking questions to these so called police officers and then was called a dick at the end. My ex-wife called the cops because I wanted a divorce and didn't want to listen to her bullshit anymore. I had no weapon and I was just sitting down in my boxers only in my own apartment. Then the senior police officer covered it up saying that she didn't hear anything. I've had fellow Marines who joined to become cops and they were the same people who would abused and hazed others because they had power and authority. If people would actually stop and police their own. It would actually make this place a better place and actually have these assholes locked up and throw away the key. I, myself don't like people who has authority and power to do their own will and instead the will of the nation.

Jocko, do not encourage folks to interfere with professionals who are just peacekeeping. Guardians have no stake in the game of any emergency. The best civilians can do is keep themselves at a safe distance and record it on their phone. Our guardians have a very thankless job. If they are out of line they will be held to account by the record of the many phones.
