@@DoubtMeTech but I do have a question I saw a video on how you can damage your preamp by plugging it directly into the audio interface is this true or is there a way to not have it break.
@DoubtMeTech
@DoubtMeTech 4 жыл бұрын
The audio interface is a mic preamp. The compressor is not. Going from mic pre to compressor to audio interface won't be an issue. Going from mic pre into XLR directly to the audio interface can be an issue because the mic preamp turns the signal from mic into line level. The only way to go from mic preamp to audio interface is if you go with a 1/4 line level jack and make sure you select line level into the interface. With this method in this video, you won't have any issues

i am new to outboard gears.. and i am fool proofing as much posible on how can i route all my signal to a patchbay.. and thank you for giving the very simple answer.. 1. dont use the 48+ phantom power in the interface, 2. use a mic pre. after the mic so it will be at a line level signal and you can now bring your outboard gear and patchbay altogether 3. put the line level signal to the input of the interface! thank you

Well that was clearly explained. This is the first video I have seen that mentions the fact that if you are using a condenser microphone and you want to use outboard gear you need to run through an outboard mic pre first. Seems pretty basic but can be overlooked if let's say you just wanted to use a compressor. I've seen some videos where they say you can use an XLR to XLR cable to go out of your mic pre and in to your audio interface, but you mentioned TRS. Why shouldn't an XLR be used? Thanks for the video.

Also, I was using the wrong cables for the inputs and outputs. I will reconnect my gear correctly this time and see how it sounds this time around. Your video was really informative and to the point! Could you give me a good vocal setting point on the 76-KT as for the input, output, attack, release, ratio and meter? Oh, and on the back of the 76-KT should the pad button be pushed in? Great video! I have a baby face pro and a WA 76. Should I Run my TLM 103 to the compressor then from the compressor out to the baby face pro interface? If I connect my mic to the baby face then run it through the compressor I have to loop it back from the compressor to the baby face but then I have no inputs for my monitors lol. My question is will I lose quality running the mic directly to the WA76 compressor first?

The mic preamp is outputting line level, not mic level. The 1/4 inch that ends up going to the preamp after the compressor has to be line level. That's why using the 1/4 is the way to go

I have the same interface, I just bought a FMR Audio PBC-6a compressor and cannot figure out how to use it. I ran the mic cable from the mic to the compressor a new the ran another mic cable from the compressor to the interface. Then I took a quarter inch balance trs cable and ran that from the compressor to the interface.When I attempt to record I’m not getting any audio. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be major,.

My compressor & preamp only allow for XLR connection, could I do this exact type of connection but use XLR cables? Except for the final step where I would use XLR out of my compressor and TRS into my interface?

You can use the XLR to TRS cables

thanks for the explanation brother. How come you cant use XLR from Pre to compressor? They are both TRS essentially

TRS helps eliminate noise, as well as provide a line input, which is key to the process

Do not use the preamp of your interface. Follow these steps exactly. The preamp I recommend in this video is really affordable and sounds great

What will it happen if I use Xlr on the whole chain? Will it damage my gear?
@DoubtMeTech
@DoubtMeTech 4 жыл бұрын
Do not use XLR. You are changing mic level to line level with the preamp, it's not staying at mic level. Do exactly as in this video.

so stupid question why the change to 1/4" from the preamp to the compressor and from the compressor to audio interface?
@DoubtMeTech
@DoubtMeTech 2 жыл бұрын
Because the preamp changes the signal to line level, and no longer is mic level. So the quarter inch is for line level

This who chain is for mono. Most microphones used for recording vocals are mono. Most outboard gear like compressors are mono

Question about ssl2+ being the interface .. if you hit the 4K button will it affect the sound ? Or is the preamp entirely bypassed because you have an external pre ?
@DoubtMeTech
@DoubtMeTech 4 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge, hitting the 4k button will still affect sound. It works on either mic or line input I believe.

Can I Connect a analog Compressor to an Interface without a pre amp ? If no why ?
@DoubtMeTech
@DoubtMeTech Жыл бұрын
You need a pre amp to power a condenser mic to reach the level needed for the compressor. Dynamic mics don't need a pre Amp, However you may need a gain amplifier like a cloud lifter.

is there any reason why it's not okay to use the preamp in your interface?
@DoubtMeTech
@DoubtMeTech 3 жыл бұрын
Because by the time you go into the interface you're now at line level, not mic level. The mic preamp brings you to line level. So if you're already at line level, then DO NOT us the preamp or phantom power. Make sure you're going into the audio interface as line level

You are connecting a compressor to the microphone, not to the audio interface ;) That would be a different setup

The mic goes to the compressor, the compressor to the audio interface. The mic is going to the compressor via the mic pre.

@@DoubtMeTech power for mic looks different, this is just cheap preamp, and preamp you got on your interface. Buy tube mic with power and then comp. With too many preamps is not good way. Anyway you must compressing sound straight from mic, why to compressing output from preamp, you got limiter there, and sound from preamp is also limited by gain already. On guitar you put compresor behind preamp too :-)

Bad tutorial. You say "plug output cable from pre to interface" Do you think there is only one place to connect a cable to the interface? Why would you assume that we all know exactly which port to plug that cable into? You should learn how to teach before you try teaching others.

When I say that, I show a diagram with text that explains it needs to be plugged into a 1/4 line level input on your interface. As this is a video and not an audio podcast, there are visuals along with my verbal instructions. Also, this has successfully helped over 40,000 ppl, so my instructions must not be too bad. I hope you got it set up correctly, if not, please watch this tutorial again and make sure to look at the visuals. Happy recording 🙏🙏
