How to connect a domain name to Netlify

It's pretty easy. I'll walk you through how I setup my own website: adesignerthatcodes.com on Netlify. Built in SSL, which is awesome (though does take 24-48 hours to kick into gear).
Don't have a domain? Purchase one with Godaddy:

Well you can’t point a Wix site to Netlify. Wix is it’s own product. What is built on Wix stays on Wix. DNS is still DNS.

Hi Hayden! Thanks for this video! Super helpful. I was able to host my portfolio successfully. Now, I’m going to be hosting a clients site on Netlify later this week and they currently have a couple of email address set up/hosted though godaddy. Willi mess up anything I’d I don’t transfer the emails? You covered MX briefly but I’m still a bit confused as to how it works and how I would switch them over. Do you happen to have a more in depth video on this process?

That was so easy, but haha I'm having a problem. When I'm going to mi domain it's going to a page about GoDaddy. I follow all the steps, or I don't know if I have to wait more time 🤔

I'd say go make a cup of coffee or go out for a walk. SSL takes about a day to kick in, but I'd guess you'll start seeing changes in about an hour or so. Officially it can take up to 72 hours. Moving domains never goes fast. If after a day nothing is changing, start troubleshooting.

I've hit a roadblock. when i try to add the domain i want to use on the dns step it says "A DNS zone for this domain already exists on NS1, the DNS provider backing Netlify DNS." I do have the domain on squarespace but i have not been able to get any support from anywhere. I know asking for help is not what youtube comments are for but in the off chance that someone has a solution i would greatly appreciate it!

Security takes up to 24/48 hours. My advice. Have a cup of coffee and go for a walk. The domain name of where it was registered isn’t important. It’s frustrating. But it can sometimes take a little while. I had a site take like 12 hours one time.

M.C.A officially it can take up to 48 hours to propagate / take into effect. Check out shotsherpa.com. It sill show you if it’s just your machine (caching) or world wide. But yes some times it’s a waiting game.

After adding Nameservers on GoDaddy, I've been waiting for 24 hours. No changes yet.

Nameservers can take up to 72 hours. When in doubt, call GoDaddy. They have good tech support.

to speed up the DNS name propagation or more precisely, to tell my PC the ip address of the website, I simply nslookup the domain name given by netlify [xxxxxxxxx.netlify.com] and add the ip address given pointing to the custom domain name I add, save it into my hosts file, immediately its working

Suppose you want to deploy ReactApp1 to subdomain1.adesignerwhocodes.com .... and Reactapp2 to subdomain2.adesignerwhocodes.com .... do i need separate name servers for a single domain with 2 subdomains?

Great question! You just have to set it up once. Since both subdomains pull from the same domain. It's really easy with netlify. Go into the domain settings and setup the custom domain. Then, after you've set the domain part up, you can add the subdomain prefix. So once you set the domain up, go into a specific site and give that site: subdomain1.adesignerwhocodes.com. I did just that with this one: sandbox.adesignerwhocodes.com Stay tuned. I'll make a video about this in the coming weeks (only because I've got a few in the queue currently).

Hi, this was helpful, I do have a question. Is your process the same as "transferring a domain to a new host?" I want to move my personal domain to netlify, but I couldn't really find anything specific in Netlify docs about transferring, only connecting which to me means I'm still "tied" to the old hosting site. I don't want to be connected in anyway to the old hosting site.

No. Transferring a domain to a new host requires different steps. I haven't really seen any docs on that either. You're not tied to anything. I'd move the domain to GoDaddy (I do recommend them for domain management) and then point your site to Netlify.

I'm about to go "back in my day" here. I remember waiting a full day for a site to flip when I change the DNS entries. Officially it can take up to 72 hours. But in reality, it takes about an hour or two. Check shotsherpa.com to see if it has changed and your browser just cached the old site.
