One feature he did not mention ,perhaps his brother failed to tell him, is the increase in volume you get from your main speakers when you use the active sub woofer to process the incoming signals from the mixer and send only the mid and highs to your main speakers! Because these main speakers do not have to handel the bass signals they have more volume output! And trust me its nice to have that extra voluume! Also with a good crossover in the sub or subs the bass should not be a problem regarding volume or muddy bass! But having said this i think this is a excellent video tutor!

Great demonstration. I've been doing this for a few years now, and I love the way how you can separate the tops from your subs. It makes the sound of your set up so much better. Keep up the good work.

it's useful for small venues or venues where sound is an issue, keeping the bass at a point so neighbours don't get upset.. Venues with sound meters also, running dsp on a venue system and using a compressor is really handy when the venue has a system to stop to much noise.

Great break down. I just recently got a pre amp Behringer mixer. The pa speakers do good on my DJ controller which is a numark ns7 but It seemed that my bass cabinets wasn’t getting a strong signal. I would hook up the pa speakers to master and the bass cabinet to booth. But on either one the I had to turn up the volume all the way for the bass cabinet and it did decent but wasn’t full potential that it could be. So that’s why I got a pre amp mixer. Also the mono advice was great I never thought of that but makes sense. But good video very helpful advice

One reason that people don't use aux fed subs for small setups like this is because now you've lost the high pass filter for your top speakers. Meaning, your 12" speakers are still trying to produce frequencies below 80-120Hz. This will produce a more muddy sound overall since all speakers are trying to produce all frequencies. Aux fed subs make sense in large clubs, stadiums, & festivals. Once you're using a digital mixer it makes sense because you can EQ/HighPass/Low Pass all of the outputs to get the best result possible. For your setup with a small analogue mixer - you would get a cleaner sound and better frequency separation by using the built in crossover in your subwoofer.
@DJ-BRY
@DJ-BRY Жыл бұрын
You do have a point. For my setup, my EV tops and subs have crossover points that I can set them to. Most popular brands such as EV, QSC, Mackie, RCF, etc allow you to set crossover points. I do understand if the speakers are older or are entry level that they may not have crossover points. In that situation, you just need to do what’s best for your setup to give the overall best sound for your event. Good comment!

Great job on this! I’ve been trying to figure out how to do this to my DJ set but couldn’t put it to words. Glad I came across your video, I understood clearly how it works with your channel mixer in this video. Do you know if this works the same for Yamaha 10channel mixer? I currently have the 6 channel mixer but I’m looking into upgrading to 10channel mixer & I would like to control my subwoofers separately as you did in this video.
@DJ-BRY
@DJ-BRY 2 жыл бұрын
I’m glad this video helped! I own the Yamaha MG06fx and it does not have a separate “out” designated because they wanted to keep it smaller and compact. The Yamaha 10 channel mixer has an option to use your “FX Send” as a separate “Out” for your subs. But if you were to use any effects such as reverb or anything, I don’t think it would work that well. On the Yamaha 10 channel, you also have the option to run an “Out” on your monitor out line located at the top right as well. I originally looked into getting the Yamaha 10 but I decided to get the Allen & Heath because of the extra “Outputs” that it had.

Correct. Your subwoofer should have a crossover to make sure it only plays the lower frequencies. I don’t know if a way to fine tune the mono signal to EQ just the subwoofer. That is when you will probably need the concert style 24 + channel mixers with all the technology in it.

I have 2 ELX200 15P's and 1 ELX200 18SP. Your sound advice here seems solid. I am not sure about the DSP on your speakers, but do you still set crossover points on the sub and tops in this configuration? Also with the separate volume for the sub, do you just monitor the clip led or do you place a mark on the sub volume to know max output if you can't monitor the clip led of the sub?
@DJ-BRY
@DJ-BRY 2 жыл бұрын
I do use the built in DSP on my speakers to set the crossover point. Luckily, my EV’s have a setting where I can say that I am pairing my specific EKX 15sp subwoofer with my top cabinet so that the crossover is perfect. I only use the mixer to control the volumes separately. I do monitor the clip on my subwoofers from time to time. Having used these subs for a good while now, I can usually tell by the loudness and punch of the bass if I am coming close to clipping. If I am clipping, I just turn down the volume on my mixer through my Aux Out and I’m good to go.

Am I right to think that the dsp setting on your tops isn’t working in sync with the bin as they both ain’t getting the same direct signal output normally when tops are connected to the sub via the crossover running off the main out put together the high end is split high to tops and low to bin but I don’t see how this works with your set up on seperate aux output 🙈

So if you run the sub alone doesn’t the tops take a beating because the sub is not taking care of the bass that is coming out of speaker?
@DJ-BRY
@DJ-BRY 2 жыл бұрын
I think you contradicted yourself in your question. To answer what I think you were trying to say…. When using a subwoofer, it does take stress off of your top speakers if you set the crossover point correctly. It is important that you tell your top speakers to only play frequencies higher than what the subwoofer plays. That way you are not using the low end of your top speakers and only letting the subwoofer push the low frequencies.
@MrSollex1
@MrSollex1 2 жыл бұрын
@@DJ-BRY So you do that by Equing the top to only play high ends and Eq the lows and mids Down ?? Is that what it is ?
@DJ-BRY
@DJ-BRY 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrSollex1 Most subs now a days have what's called a crossover. This is the point at which the subwoofer will push our a certain frequency and below. Usually 100hz is a good spot. Your sub will play anything 100hz and lower while your tops will play anything 100hz or higher. If you have older speakers or your speakers don't have that capability, adding a subwoofer will just enhance the sound and add more low end.
@DJOG123
@DJOG123 2 жыл бұрын
@@DJ-BRY But if you’re not running your tops through the subwoofer isn’t that eliminating the use of the built in crossover on the sub? Because you are running them on separate channels there’s no way your subs crossover will have any affect on your tops. Not saying how you’re setting your system is incorrect but I believe you would have to adjust the bass down on your tops.
@superdad8274
@superdad8274 Жыл бұрын
@@DJ-BRY thank you again. I am trying to say that since the sub is not connected therefore it is not working in conjunction with speakers so the speakers will be at full range in the bass side of things. No crossover since they are not connected

Doesnt putting the sub on aux send 1 get annoying as a DJ though? If you're killing the music and want just the microphones with sound you need to adjust two knobs. I guess you could turn down on the software but eh

TRS to XLR Male.

Yeah but the problem is that TRS are only have limited meters to make it work with properlly on signal. XLR is still the best way and for mono why not connect left and right in individual channels to make it mono? Most of pa speakers now have apps so you can control their individual volumes

@DJ-BRY

Personally, I liked the symmetrical look of my two 12’s on top of the 15 inch subs. In a perfect world I would prefer to have 18 inch subs, but the 15’s are just more portable. I still like my 15’s though!

i have an 18" sub i put it in the center it weights 77 pounds so it is big and heavy i would recommend going to a music shop and testing the sub you want and comparing it and finding the sound you are looking for
