I've used these products all over the balustrades in our 50+ year old home. Nothing lasts forever, but but these are cheap, easy and really strong. (My 3 year old grandson can hang on them, and he does.) Great for newel posts. Read the instructions carefully. Most are common sense, but, like all projects, think every aspect through in advance. Good luck to the next people who buy our house. They will not have a clue as to how everything holds together.

great video. Nobody has covered the tricky part though of fixing the other end once one end is in place.

Okay..... just finished. In order to attach both of the angled zipbolts.... one of the newel posts has to be free. I thought all I would have to do was just have one able to pivot.... but that's not enough. It has to be totally undone. Thankfully mine are just bolted onto the stringer, so it was easy to unbolt the bottom one. I am now going to reply to my own thread above and tell all.

How do you use this product between two newel posts that are very thick, solid and already in place?
@jorasparents5 жыл бұрын
Ah! I think I found the answer on Zipbolt's site - thankfully, they had a complete video showing upper and lower. You need to buy a second-type of kit called a slipfix railbolt. That's what you use on the top. Go to this page: zipboltonline.com.au/catalog/product/view/id/51/s/11-560-angled-railbolt-blister-pack-qty-2pcs/ ... then go about halfway down the page and click on videos.

I am currently installing a handrail using several of the Zip bolt products. I would also recommend watching the actual zip bolt videos because this guy has left out some significant steps and measurements. Not saying that his way doesn’t work but the actual instructions and videos are slightly different. Also the paddle bit that comes with the hole drilling jig is garbage. I would suggest investing in a 1” forstner bit for easier more accurate drilling with no chip out.

do you use the same fixing kit at both ends of the hand rail?

My (angled) railing is only a 2x4. Will this method work with this size of wood?
@sharonshookup3 ай бұрын
to answer my own question..... I had to make adjustments. Firstly, I didn't use 3/8th inch drill bit for the horizontal hole, I used a 5/16th inch. There was less play that way. The last bit of knuckle on the bolt I just knocked into place giving it an even better friction fit. Then, of course I couldn't drill the 1" hole so deep seeing as my material was only 1 1/2 ". So, I had to drill the horizontal hole 1/2" from the bottom. Now, I do have a dado in the bottom of the rail, so I basically had to drill the 1" hole deep enough so that I could lay my fillet piece in afterwards and cover up the gear head. (I couldn't use the plug) The 1" hole ended up being about 1" deep. I had to buy a forstner bit so that the tip of a regular drill bit wouldn't break through to the other face. Anyway, I'm still testing before a take a risk on my actual railing. And I've got to do it twice !!! Wish me luck.
@sharonshookup3 ай бұрын
So..... I ended up breaking one of the bolts. I had used a 1/4" drill for the pilot hole and used a small piece of copper pipe to help with the turning. I was on my last half turn when it just ripped apart at the knuckle. Yup, half of it is still in the newel post. Thankfully I had purchased two packages and I had extra. This time I made the drill bit a little bigger..... 17/64 th .... we all have that size. I drilled just above the stuck bolt and was able to twist it in by hand..... carefully. It wasn't too easy..... so it'll be fine. As I said above, I was working with 2X4 material so the holes had to be drilled in different places. I had to buy that forstner bit and the right angle ratchet attachment. I made up some fillet for between the spindles and yes, it will cover a multitude of sins. Now i have to attach the spindles..... but that will be tomorrow.

The directions are different than what you show in the video, the 1” hole according to the directions says to drill 2 1/2” back from the center of the 3/8 hole after the angle is cut. Your video shows marking the 1” hole before you cut the angle 2 1/2” back from the end. Not sure which is correct?

This looks really good until you try it out. The drilling angle had to be precise. You also have to drill into the rail almost 3 inch. 2 and a half inch will not be enough.

Okay..... I'm trying to screw the gear head onto the bolt. I am dry-fitting the sharp angle of the railing. Neither the screw-driver nor the drill nor the stubby will fit in that sharp angle to be able to turn the mechanism on the gear head. Is there a special tool out there? I have some right angle screw drivers, but none that will hold the bit.
@sharonshookup3 ай бұрын
I bought a right angle attachment for that tight angle..... so now I need six hands !! I sat there at the tight angle for at least an hour trying to get the gear head to grab a hold of the bolt threads. Everything had a couple of turns falling on the ground. Finally it latched on like a hungry baby and I was there.
