How to tie in a gable roof to the side of another roof. This can be a very confusing part for new framers. Any time you connect two roofs it can be a lot of math and angles. Hopefully this video simplifies it and helps! Thank you guys so much for the support, Rathburn Ranch is growing every day!

Thanks for showing how to do this which from your video I pretty much understand it all plus if done my fair share carpentry work. But I wish you could explain how to do the rafters where the fascia connects to both roofs because to me that’s the hardest part. For some reason there is not that many videos showing that process which is so important to connect that area properly for shingles and for looks.
@RathburnRanch

Absolutely! and yes I share your same frustration. The reason I didn't go into detail on that in the video was honestly mine did not turn out very good either and I didn't want to mislead people. It can be very difficult to get both sides perfect, especially with how inaccurate these trusses were! Always room for improvement and I appreciate the constructive help on the channel!

@rnRanch I've been stuck renting for 2 decades. We're in Arizona, and because of the clowns moving from California, real estate and rent has skyrocketed. We're moving to another state and I'm buying a lot and building a small home - about 1200 sqft. Kids are grown now. I have skills, but I don't know everything (obviously). So it's videos like this that will help me figure out the details - like how to join two rooves. It's going to be a ranch home, but I want to add a little character to the house by adding a front porch and foyer area in the front. So I need to join two roofs to do that.

Great video! What are the metal spacers between the trusses, about 6" above your sheathing?
@RathburnRanch
@RathburnRanch Жыл бұрын
Not exactly sure what they’re called, I just got them from my local lumber yard, they call them truss spacers. They fold up and allow you to temporarily connect them at exactly 2’ without having to measure. You just leave them on there and sheet over them. Quite expensive but really speed things up!

Question: what do you think about a 2/12 pitch addition to the long side of a house with a 10/12 pitch? New England home, so lots of rain and snow. We just bought it and there’s lots of water damage in the valley connecting them
@RathburnRanch
@RathburnRanch 8 ай бұрын
I’m not an expert but personally I would never go flatter than a 3:12. I’d say if you can’t change the pitches, ice and water the entire bottom roof and 2 rows up the 10:12. Sorry to hear about the issues but congrats on the new purchase!

hey bud, thanks for a great video! Would you recommend fixing the dog house ridgebeam onto a rafter on the main roof? Or is onto the OSB okay? How thick would you want that OSB to be? Cheers!
@RathburnRanch
@RathburnRanch 9 ай бұрын
I’m not a carpenter but I believe the osb is more than adequate. If you remembered to do the math before hand, blocking underneath the osb at that intersection would be best practice. The rafters are supporting a vast majority of the weight so I wasn’t concerned with such a small roof. Cheers!
@BrianKrahmer
@BrianKrahmer 9 ай бұрын
i think it depends upon how much load (snow, etc) will be put on the roof, and how long the ridge is. one end of the that ridge will carry 1/4 of the weight of the area of the assembly. if in doubt, just add some blocking between the trusses underneath the sheathing

you have to consider loads in order to determine the correct material to use, and whether or not it needs support. i've built roofs spec'd at 45# load, and will soon be building one that will be a 250# load! there won't be any valleys on that one, but in such a case, there would be no 2x4's involved!
