The old macbooks only support video through the HDMI cable. Todays laptops come with a dual audio/visual hdmi output. So think of those old school TV and VCR plugins. You need a wire for video (HDMI) and two wires for audio (left and right). You'll have to buy an audio wire that plugs into the area where you would plug in your earphones which splits into an audio left and right to plug into your TV. Hope that helps!

I usually don't write reviews but I just wanted to say thanks for this video, was really helpful. It was the bright light at the end of the tunnel for me b/c I've been running around like a mad woman trying to figure why my Macbook (08) is not compatible with my LCD tv using a Mini Display port, not knowing that it cannot support it so finding out that I needed a different cable made sense! You make a really good point, and I didn't think of that - I guess if you were to plug in your audio into an external set of speakers instead of the TV then maybe that would work - So then you would have to coordinate the audio wires according to the input at the back of your speakers. Let me know if you were successful

Thank you for making this video! I got the cables to do this and hooked everything up, but the laptop screen stayed normal and my tv just displayed the default space and stars background wallpaper. There were no icons on the tv display, no application windows, no menu bar... Nothing! I figured out that if I moved the mouse over far enough to one side that it would appear on the tv screen, but I didn't know how to display my full computer screen on it. Thanks for explaining the mirroring thing!

in order to use the imacs as a display you can only use display port connections, so itll be a display port to mini display or mini display port to mini display port. its called TDM mode and you need 10.6 or later.

this worked great, thanks so much! the only thing id say (whic i stupidly didnt realise) is that you need to press mirror so that the screen on your laptop is exactly the same as the one on your tv :) also you can get all of the cables for dirt cheap on ebay !

I have a mid 2007 iMac,and It DOESNT ACCEPT HDMI,i WENT THREW 3 DIFFERENT CABLES,before I found out that the highest is only VGA,So I finally got the cable and it works PERFECTLY on my 42in VIZIO.Just thought you want to know.Not all iMacs from 2007 to 2009 are HDMI.Take care,GIO😀😀

This is exactly what I wanted to do, I'll know what to do once I get the correct cable now. I already made the mistake of buying an adapter for newer IMacs ah well it doesn't matter correct one ordered now, using the old A1208 has made me want to buy a newer second hand one anyway so the first adapter I bought in error will probably be useful at some point.

im not sure but i have a feeling that its due to being played in a different video format that your TV doesn't understand... so try either converting the video... (fairly long winded explanation) or find another video format and download it :)

I've used this for a couple of months, and it works fine. I have do have a small question... If I watch a movie in VLC and I drag it to my TV screen, but when I than put it on fullscreen, my macbook's screen turns black and is useless... It would be handy if I could keep using my macbook while watching a movie on fullscreen on my TV... Is that possible in any way?

apparently mini DVI hookups (like the one you have) to HDMI doesn't sync audio. I didnt know this either. You need to get an AUX cable that adapts to the red-white inputs on your tv apparently.

Thanks, Swey. I'm considering getting the mini DVI to HDMI adapter to connect my 2007 MacBook to my TV. Since as you mentioned my old Mac doesn't support audio through HDMI, I think that no audio will come out of the TV anyway, even with the separate cable coming out of the headphone jack because the TV is set to source the content from HDMI 1 (or 2). Wouldn't plugging the RCA (red/white) into the TV require you to source it from one of the AV's, therefore forcing you to switch out of HDMI?

I have a MacBook laptop that I bought in 2008. With software 10.6.8. I have the cable shown in the video. However as soon as I plug it into my tv the Mac screen just starts flashing blue and white. When I pull the plug out it goes back to normal. However when the mac screen is doing this, the TV screen is not doing anything. It's not giving me the chance to click detect displays or anything because it goes blue/white. Any hints/help PLEASE!!!

I have a mid-2010 iMac and used a MiniDisplayPort to HDMI and connected to the TV, but no mirroring occured. The "Displays" setting box is checked to detect, but nothing happens on the TV and no mirroring icon displays on the menu bar. Any advise is appreciated, and upgrading to Mountain Lion is not feasible. Thanks!

Hi, You showed how to give a live feed OUT of the iMAC. But how do you use the display port to get a live feed INTO the iMac? That is, trying to view video from a camera on the iMac as you are making a recording.

I had a mini-DVI to HDMI cable, but when I put it in as it should be (in the Mac port) the screen on the television had an extremely red hue (the desktop could be seen) I had to wiggle the cable and put it in at an angle in order to get a normal colored screen. My 2006 iMacs/Snow Leopard mini-DVI port, linked via adaptor, displays properly on an old S-vid CRT TV. My newer 2008 iMac/El Capitans mini-DVI port, linked via another adaptor to a new flat panel, HDMI TV, displayed properly for a few days and then failed. Many hardware and software experiments failed. I want to use my newer 2008 iMac because its faster online and has newer programs. And I want to use the new TV. Advice?

Jessica Barnard your older macbook does not connect sound this way. You have to use a stereo mini to RCA adapter, and then run RCA cables to the audio input of your TV.
