Yep, when AT&T's phone service was hooked up with the internet at the house, they basically did me a huge favor by doing all that rewiring in the outside demarc box, and provided that single box that their router led into with a phone cable, which now I can use instead with my VoIP line. Basically AT&T was offering me their own expensive VoIP solution (not an old fashioned copper service), and now I can leverage that infrastructure so easily. Thanks for confirming!

I have the magic jack plus, cable modem (two boxes) and router. I disconnected the cable phone lines. I still have the box from the cable company but I'm trying to get the phone lines to ring throughout the house. I got frustrated and took the cable back up battery modem box down. Can I still try to hook up the magic jack to ring throughout the house?

I left ma bell ages ago, its been so long I don't even remember when we disconnected service with them... I have the MJ+ which can be plugged directly into a router (or computer). I bought a used thin client, loaded the Magic Jack app onto it and then plugged it into the router via Ethernet. I have the cable modem, router, thin client and computer plugged into a CyberPower UPS battery backup system. You don't need to wire your VOIP device into the main telephone wiring of your home to connect all of your phones if you have a cordless phone system. None of my phones (including the base station) are using the telephone wiring in the house because it goes through the router, they just need to be plugged into power, they work on 6.0 DECT frequency but 2.4 ghz or 5.0 ghz would work the same. All 4 of my phones ring when I get a call and none of them are using the wiring...

Wouldn't that modem, a Cisco 2911 with VWICs, the proper startup config, and IP phones be easier?

you do not have to cut off old telco drop in the demarc box. losen the nut and tire blue white wire to green and blue to red (all on the left) tighten the nuts and go to the right side and unhook those little phone jacks rj11s and you good to go. no need to scotch lock

That big black thing is not a back up battery. That's a phone modem the needs a back up battery inserted to the bottom so in case of a power outage u can make calls for about 2 -3 hrs. When you're connecting the house lines you have to make sure that the pairs match. If your kitchen wires are blue and white blue and they're connected to the red and green pins inside the phone jack then at the NID that same blue and white blue pair need to be connected. That is the same thing for any other room in your house. Most older houses have one phone line that goes from room to room looped through, so if in one room it's cut then only part of your house will have dial tone. You need internet so if your modem is for phone and Internet make sure you don't disconnect the modem from power, just the phone line and insert it into your magic jack.

this explains nothing how to fire up all outlets in your house RED GREEN are power and ground BLUE BLUEWHITE are your main cables that sync through all your outlets in house if you take off the phone faceplate you will see BLUE BLUEWHITE all connected behind em and then it runs to that old telephone line toned out properly ... IF you are unsure what to do or how to fire up house you need someone that knows what there doing
