In today’s class, we are going to learn how to construct a perpendicular at the end of a given line. Get your Technical Drawing instruments and materials and be ready to draw with me.
To construct a perpendicular at the end of a given line, all you have to do is follow these simple steps.
STEP 1. Draw the given line AB.
On your drawing paper, use your T-square to draw a line AB and label the ends accordingly.
STEP 2. From A extend a construction line outwards.
Now use your T-square to draw a horizontal construction line to the left of line AB. You can actually choose which end of line AB to begin this construction from.
STEP 3. With A as centre, and any convenient radius draw the semicircle CD.
Place the point of your pair of compasses at point A and with any convenient radius, draw the semi-circle CD to meet line AB and the extended construction line.
STEP 4. With C and D as centres and any convenient radius, draw arcs to intersect at E.
Place the point of your compass at point C and with a convenient radius, draw an arc. Now place the point of your compass at point D and with the same radius, draw an arc to intersect the previous arc at point E.
STEP 5. Draw a straight line to connect point A and the point of intersection of the arcs.
Lastly, position your set square carefully and draw a straight line from point A to pass through the point of intersection of the drawn arcs. This straight line should terminate at point F.
The straight line AF, is the required perpendicular.
With all you have learned in this class, you should have no difficulty with constructing a perpendicular at the end of a given line.
Till I come your way again, keep practicing, keep learning and keep having fun with Technical Drawing.
