How To: CONTAINER STEAM STERILIZATION

Steam is a time-tested method to sterilize not only soil, but pots, trays, and other planting containers. Container steaming is a popular method used to efficiently and effectively steam in bulk.
In the case of the Virginia Department of Forestry, a Sioux SF-20 low pressure steam generator has been plumbed to two insulated shipping containers, making quick work of sterilizing their planting trays.

Doesn’t the shipping container have to reach 250 degrees for some time to be considered sterilization ? Steam by itself is 212 degrees? Is this technically pasteurization?

Thanks for the question. Growers are targeting approximately 160° F for a specific time period to remove certain pathogens, bacteria, & viruses. This allows them to reuse the clean growing containers. Heat above 180° F could deform the growing containers. So, yes they are technically pasteurizing the growing containers.

What would the cost be for a smaller unit that could properly hold a 20foot connex at pasturization temps. Thanks
