Hello. I'm about to get a cassette desk. As I don't have an amp with it, is connecting the player directly to the computer a problem? Will the sound I get be good enough to record without an amp? I say this because I have to set my microphone volume to 80% and the boost microphone to 0dB to avoid background noise and I'm afraid that, without an amp, I'll have to increase the sound beyond these parameters and therefore record background noise.

First, try to capture audio directly connecting deck's output (R & L output) to computer line in port.If there is not enough good audio signal that found after recording,than it is better to use audio capture card.But never input signal directly from power amp,it can damage some components at input port of computer.We can use 33K-100K resistor in series to amp output so that it will be equal to line in level,afterthat we can connect to computer.

What if my laptop doesn't have a line in port? Do i need to buy an external soundcard?

Yes,you should buy external sound card.

You can use a boombox if you want, you wont have to worry about batteries becoming dead or flat. A boombox runs from mains.

You should plug 3.5mm jack to computer's line in port.And ''Open Sond Setting"" from task bar,than check mic signal.If this does not work,than you can buy a usb sound adapter to capture aux or line in audio.
