Thank you! Have been recording my grandson's taekwondo classes with a Galaxy S8 phone and used Clipchamp to edit the videos. Upgraded my phone to a Galaxy S24 and the videos would take 20 minutes to load in Clipchamp. The cause was the S24 used H.265. After changing the phone settings, still had H.265 formatted videos. Found your video and it was the easiest one for me to understand. Had to go through one extra step as when I tried to execute Handbrake, my Window's 10 system informed me that I had to update to a new ".net core", but the message included the link. Back up and running with Clipchamp.

I have come to find that the optimum MP4 file size should come from the result of a video bitrate of around 2500kbps and audio bitrate of 224kbps. If one wishes to reduce filesize, all one needs to do is reduce those two things - NO NEED to change the codec (unless you find it absolutely necessary)! You can still retain decent video quality as low as 1500kbps (though I personally would not go lower than 2250kbps, or 2000kbps at the absolute smallest) and as low as 192kbps (but NO lower than 160kbps, or 128kbps at the absolute minimum) for the audio. Audio sampling should be WAV/PCM uncompressed at 48kHz (48000Hz) / 1586kbps rather than 44kHz (44100Hz) / 1411kbps - the latter is perfect for actual audio files (music and ripped CDs), but not audio within video - I've found problems with that combination. But that's just me.

Should you shoot 5K, 4k or 2.7 in HVEC 265 if you want to create the very best footage and then convert to 264 or just go ahead and shoot in 1440, 1080 and have a more usable way to share your videos? It seems difficult to share good quality to Facebook, KZbin is somewhat better. I have a chance to be in some beautiful place in the U.S and looking for advice for shooting outdoor video on a Hero 9. If a 5k or 4k video is converted, do you still have the same viewing quality or does it reduce it?

Thank you so much for this becuase I use Davinci resolve the free version and I found out that the only way to get use your GPU export is to put it in H.265 but KZbin and others don't really support it that well so with this I can use my GPU in my laptop instead of my CPU.

I got version 1.5.1 and it did convert my x265 file to mkv which did not play on my samsung tv. Nor was it recognized. That left me with 2 more choices so I tried the web and same thing.....nothing played. So I tried mp4 and that worked but nothing tells me that any of these files are x264 format. What am I doing wrong? Do I have to convert the x265 to 3 formats to see which one works?

It worked great. I do not know why, but my computer was showing, before the conversion, a wrongly trimmed and distorted video and I thought I have lost my filming. Thanks a lot for the tip.

Would handbrake be used with GeForce RTX 3xxxx to covert 10bit hevc to 10 bit 4:4:4. The Nividia cards left out the 4:2:2 off the decoder. Do not have intel cpu with igpu (quick sync). Newer cameras are going to hevc h.265

All of my HEVC/265 videos (rips) won't play via QuickTime on any Mac OS, even though they are in mp4 format. When I use VLC, or watch via Plex, the contrast and color shifts to a blue/green tint. Converting them to various 264 formats does not fix the issue. Any ideas? TIA.

It didn't work for me. When I drag and drop or open the h265 file in Handbrake it is unable to do anything. Shot on the Canon R6. Handbrake shows the name of the file but cannot convert.

Shot my footage in HEVC format on a samsung S24Ultra. Files not recognized in Premiere 5.5 which led me to this video. For some reason my HEVC files have an mp4 extension, not H265, which is strange. I used handbrake to convert them. These new files simply made Premiere crash. Also, the preview in handbrake only showed the audio. There was no video portion of the file yet I can see the video on my phone. Once I saw this video I was starting to have hope. But the reality is that this did not fix the issue.

Why go backwards? 265 is a better codec than 264. Most platforms including youtube accepts them.
