The report left out Germany's mining and consumption if lignite coal, which increased when Germany phased out nuclear. As a result, Germany increased their domestic coal consumption and now imports nuclear produced energy from France, in a classic display of hypocritical nimby-ism.
@Soordhin
@Soordhin 3 жыл бұрын
Funny though, Germany is actually the biggest electricity exporter by value worldwide, not domestic value, but money paid for exported electricity. And of course it imports a lot less from france than it exports as well. That said, Nuclear energy has not been phased out yet, it is in the progress of being phased out for the next 18 months. And at the same time coal has been reduced as well, although much slower than it has to be to keep up with the Paris climate targets. Instead natural gas has increased, as has the use of renewables, now making up roughly 50% of the electricity mix.

Germany and Frace are both the biggest exporters in Europe, sometimes Germany is exporting more electric energy, sometimes it is France. Even in 2019, Germany exported 10% of the elctric energy produced.

The chemical production company uses as much energy in a day as a four households use in a year. At the end of the report the reporter says to decrease energy prices they can start producing renewable energy themselves by installing solar panels on the roof. How large of a roof do they have where they can produce so much energy on site?
@meerkathero6032
@meerkathero6032 3 жыл бұрын
Let's do the maths ;) and consider that the illustration example used by the journalist is somehow within the real life range: Approximately 4.000 kWh per year is the consumption of an average 4 person household in Germany, multiplied by 365 days = 1.460.000 kWh. A 2 MW solar PV power plant can produce that amount of electric energy at Hamburg, the roof area needed would be around 10.000 m² to accomodate 2 MW solar. Not much for an industrial company. The company has around 8.000 m² roof on several buldings at their location Lauenburg Elbe and hundreds of hectars cheap pasture land around the industrial area is available too (for the case that the roof can't carry solar). The energy would be much cheaper from solar compared to the energy tariff mentioned in the video. It would be an easy task for Mr. Worlee to cover the energy needs of his company with an own solar PV, if he would have that intention. German manager love to waste their time moaning and airing theier frustrations and forgetting in the process to think about how they can improve their bussines.
@DanielBrklyn
@DanielBrklyn 3 жыл бұрын
@@meerkathero6032 Researching online I am getting the rule of thumb that you need 4 acres for every 1MW of solar PV power. So it would be 8 acres for 2 MW. 8 acres equals 32,375 square meters. Where did you get the 10,000 square meter amount?
@meerkathero6032
@meerkathero6032 3 жыл бұрын
@@DanielBrklyn The maths are one thing but the really important topic is the mindset of Mr. Worlee, who inherited the 160 years old company. He waste his time moaning and airing his frustrations about the energy prices and forgetting in the process to think about how he can improve bussines. It would be an advantage for the company to make use of the cheapest energy sources in Germany, which are at the moment wind and solar. Next to the main factory is abundance of cheap pasture land which can be utilized. Now the maths. Your calculation is absolutely correct for a ground mounted installation. The situation is different on a roof, because the PV modules are usually installed paralell to the roof, means the gaps between PV module rows needed for a ground mounted installation are not required for a roof paralell installation. One need 5-7 m² space (depends on the efficiency of the PV module) for one kWp power. I considered the high efficient modules. 2.000 kWp * 5m²/kWp = 10.000 m². I had a look on the homepage of Worlee Chemicals and read their sustainability report. The figure of the electric energy consumption mentioned in the video is a little bit low. The total consumption of the company (all branches) was 9,3 GWh in 2019 according to Worlee's sustainability report. To cover that consumption a 12 MW PV installation would be needed. Ok, such roofspace they likely do not have, even all roofs combined will not be enough. However, 18 heactars for a ground mounted PV is still reasonable and not a big thing. For such a PV power plant the LCOE is around 5 Cent/kWh, compared to the average electricity price for industry of 10 Cent/kWh. A good portion of the load during day could be directly covered by cheap solar, the rest and during night would come from the grid.

Perhaps he can use more efficient plate heat exchangers, newer more efficient pump motors. heat pumps for cooling, recover the heat from the used cooling water. I am sure he could even get a government grant to do these things, even though he can probably afford it himself and it will actually make him money in the long term.

Just heard, that in 1990 81% of our energy was fossil fuels. 20 years later, in 2019 it's still 81%. The U.N. also says it expects we will use 2% more fossil fuels each year for at least 10 years! Lastly, fossil fuel companies get 300 times the subsidizes of clean energy companies. We are standing still, so dealing with the climate crisis is miniscule in my book.
