Great advice. We made vegan ham for nothanksgiving, and my mother in law actually said she enjoyed it and that it was good. I was brought up on the streets and later joined the Marine Corps, I'm definitely the 3rd personality. I never sugar coat anything. veganism really has made me stronger mind wise. I easily can cope, have thick skin, stand up for my own rights meanwhile standing up for others, and don't get hurt by others trying to purposely bully me. When I was a kid I did not have these qualities. Being more true to myself has really made me achieve happiness really. All it took was veganism.

Thank you. I have been lacto vegetarian (no eggs)for a long time. I had several attempts since 2006 to drop dairy, but it was the mutual effort with my children on board that enabled the push to being fully vegan. So bringing my children up vegetarian and being warned by family and friends that they would rebel against my extreme lifestyle, I put in a lot of effort over the years to make them comfortable with their diet. Not to enforce it, but to let them choose. Given the extreme reaction of society...for example a doctor friend who more or less insisted that their diet, though well intended, was tantamount to child abuse, I let them follow their social pressure excursions into eating meat and fish. My confidence paid off, in that they chose to reject it and in later years as a family, supported the transition to becoming vegan. It's much more challenging for parents in family and social environments to hold their space. But my children also found it very difficult over the years as visitors to friends houses whose parents refused to accommodate them. I always offered to send them for sleep overs with easy prep vegetarian options at mealtimes. Often the most insistent people saying that it wasn't a problem, would give them a lettuce leaf and a tomato or potatoes and carrots, just eliminating the meat part of their meal. Or saying something was vegetarian whilst sneaking meat into the meal. I always found that kind of underhand pressure difficult to negotiate, but we survived. The one that my children found to be most difficult was having adult family members humiliate them and their diet. This is hard for a child as a guest to stay respectful towards adults who are not. But my youngest in particular learned to hold her boundaries by asking that they respect her food choices in the same way she was expected to respect theirs. As a child, I think that was the best way to negotiate the power dynamics existing between generations.

Both my family and my in-laws are very sweet and try to accommodate my veganism, but even when they’re trying, it’s remarkable how difficult it is for them to grapple with the concept of not having any animal products at all. Animal abuse is so much a part of our American hegemony, to abstain from it, one has to recognize it in the first place, which seems to be the hard part for my family. They do try though. Happy holidays everyone!

@@justinteehee4358 you know as a non vegan myself I've literally researched the hell out of it, right down to our intestines, teeth, stomach acid, jaw structure and movement, even the thickness and design of our tongues all points to us being anatomically herbivores! As for dietary, my Girlfriend and others I know who don't eat meat are very healthy, and my research has found plant based is healthier and safer. Basically I did research in order to debunk vegan arguments which lead me down a rabbit hole proving them right and myself wrong. My plan is to eat less and less and perhaps eventually make a complete switch. Just because I love the taste of meat I simply won't be continually lied to. Continue with your diet by all means if that's what you want, but at least research it before making comments. I've thrown every argument at them in the past, I research their responses and I kept falling flat, so just saying.

@@jawsjaws4018 You are the rarest of the carnivore species my friend, I salute you! Going vegan is depicted in the mainstream as something very fringe and radical, not to mention extremely difficult. I personally don't feel that extending our moral consideration to other animals on this planet is particularly radical. Also it really isn't hard to make the switch outside of a little bit of initial effort. What IS difficult is undoing the years of cultural norms that have been baked into us since birth that teach us to see other creatures as inferior and whose only purpose is to be exploited by humanity. Best of luck to you my friend, hope you have a fantastic holiday!

Also, ALWAYS be polite and calm. No matter what is being said, no matter how disrespectful and rude any comment against veganism might be, anger and hate as an answer/comeback never accomplishes anything good. Even if it hurts and even if it's upsetting because we saw the pain and suffering of animals, PLEASE trust me, if people leave the conversation feeling attacked, judged, angry and upset because everyone yelled and insulted each other, they're going to be even less inclined to listen to your reasons and point of view. Patience, understanding and kindness is always the key. Hate and anger never does any good.

I had a conversation with a hunter in my family, and it was so amazing to see that he was genuinely interested in learning about veganism. They have some rabbits and emus and while they were planning to keep them for meat, they’ve fallen in love with them so much that they would never kill them. Hearing this from a hunter made me realise while the change might be slow, but anyone can change.

I am pretty well informed about veganism. But the ability to express myself properly gets hindered, depending on the person I'm speaking to. I have found that the only way that rly works at building confidence when speaking to others about veganism, is knowledge. Learn learn learn learn absolutely everything you can. Diet, environment, ethics, every little detail. That way, you will be able to adapt to any confrontation alot more easily and always will know that you have something useful to say

Great advice from a great person. Thank you. I started out as personality Type 1 four and a half years ago. Kind of skipped Type 2 because of Covid-19 (no real gatherings possible) and went straight to Type 3. Currently working my way to Type 2. I'm gonna stay home alone this Christmas and I'm gonna love it. Told my family that I don't want to be around when they have dead people on their plates. And that I would gladly come by any other day. I'll still see some of them on the 24th since it is my birthday and I invited them over. Since I am WFPB there will be freshly cut fruits and veggies, tea and water. The other day I was at my sisters (half my family was there too). Only for tea time in the evening. There were some cookies and cakes with eggs, butter and milk. I didn't say anything. But I brought a raw vegan chocolate-banana-cake. They loved it. This is my way of handling things. Sometimes I feel I should do more to try to convince my family to go vegan. But then again I feel like showing them that it is actually possible seems to have some kind of influence on them. Anyways. Stay strong fellow vegans. The end of the year is near and the end of carnism will be too. ✊💚🍀

Brilliant! Excellently done, really! With the 3 personalities, that's a very smart move. I'm personality 3 and I do it the exact same ways that you described: for my own family, I cook at home; the 2nd day of Xmas I'll go to the less understanding/"able" part of the family, so I eat my leftovers from day 1 and I visit them afterwards, for a different activity. On day 3, we'll be with the more understanding part of the family, and they know my stance, so I picked a vegan recipe that we prepare together. That way, they learn about vegan food, and no animal products are served, win-win. :) I also love your examples of personality 2 (Ed) and Gary for personality 3 :D Merry Christmas Joey

How to cope.... Never let another human being compromise your beliefs and convictions. It takes a true human being to stand firm against differing opinions. Stand firm in your beliefs. The path of each human being is a different one. And no one can sway you from what you decide is yours. The true ones will respect you and love you no matter what you eat. The rest can get over it.

I'm personality 3. If meat is being eaten I'm not at the table, regardless of the event or situation. I don't socialise with people while they're doing terrible things, as to do so without challenge would be to condone their actions. When invited to a meal including flesh, ovulations and secretions, I explain that cruelty sickens me and I won't sit with those feasting on the results of exploitation and violence. If they really want me there, they'll make the entire meal vegan - and if they don't want me there then so be it.

Joey I'm so grateful that you did this video. Even though I'm an experienced vegan activist, this topic is difficult even for me, because sometimes it's hard to choose what to do in these situations, because maybe we talked a lot with our friends and families about the issue, and we know they won't change. Maybe we don't have yet our own apartment to invite family at home or we are far away.. Living alone. There are so many different situations and you sum up everything so beautifully, giving amazing advices and letting us feel so accepted and understood. It's the first time that you really made me cry at the end. Your words are so comforting. Thank you so so much! I respect you so much and you officially became my favorite activist on earth 💚🙌🏼🌎 even though I love Ed and Gary, but your videos in this period are just awesome! And the best thing is that I'm so proud of you, thinking what an amazing evolution you made! It's overwhelming. Letting aside how you were before coming vegan, things of your past we know and that underlines even more the crazy evolution, you first were a person who immediately knew many topics and you were able to discuss them with people, but your approach was a little aggressive and very direct. We've almost all have been there, multiple times, because it's very hard to not lose our sh*t, but look at you now. It's impressive, you've become so calm and even when people try to provoke you on the streets, you respond with humor, yet effective answers. It really blew my mind, how much you've changed and how you experienced by yourself the best techniques to use, to be the most effective when it comes down to telling the truth about animal agriculture and let people open their eyes. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. Happy Christmas and happy new year. You're our hero, for us, and for the animals. We love you.

Exactly, just before xmas I stayed for a long weekend with an afghan refugee family that I'd been supporting. They only arrived in the UK just a over a year ago, most of the family spoke no english on arrival and the word vegan doesn't exist in Afghanistan or its languages. They still cooked me vegan meals from scratch every day for lunch and dinner and things in packets that they were unsure of like breakfast cereal and seasonings- they'd bring me the packet so I could check. The dad knew a couple nearby as they served in the army together and the english army guy's wife popped round with a homemade vegan chocolate cake- first time I met her! They were all so nice!!

I feel like many people don't want to admit this to themselves, but there's no point in having toxic people in your life - especially when you think about the context we're talking about. they literally behave that way because they feel entitled to the consumption of dismembered children and mothers. and they treat you like this because you don't. that alone should be enough. thank you, joey, you MVP.

So, what I am getting from all of this is that being a vegan is all about not killing animals and less about nutrition. It is quite ok to hate, and cut your families out of your lives for eating meat, because animals are much more important than humans. If there is a life and death situation between an animal and a human, I guess I know who you will let die.

I definitely think I fit into personality 2, but I do recognise that I still have alot of reading and research to do. I have only been a vegan for some months now. Thanks to people like Joey though, I have hope that more people like me will start listening to the arguments and perhaps change their minds, or better yet, give arguments back that could make people re-think the way they think about veganism. I have ran into far too many vegan evangelicals who know nothing about the philosophy and science behind their position, and only about their own emotions, which they cannot help but irrationally take out on other people. Now, although I am sympathetic towards such people because they recognise the suffering of animals just like I do, they could definitely educate themselves more.

My daughter supports carnivore diet and recently wanted to catch up for lunch as she was passing through my area on a trip. I suggested as a vegan and a mum, I'd make something like soup or a curry for us to eat. She refused to come to our home for that one meal because she had to have a meat based meal and suggested I drive 14km to my nearest town to meet her for lunch so she could eat meat! This is the point where I have decided to distance myself from this person....my daughter. It was just one meal without animal suffering, one day in her life. 😢

Excellent points. I literally know no vegans at all and I don’t know anyone who would even consider going vegan. It is possible that some laugh at my choices together behind my back though this may not be the case; it is likely that they give my choice very little thought except when it potentially causes some inconvenience for them such as when they choose a restaurant with no vegan options (the majority of restaurants where I live).

Speaking for myself, but if it's family or friends you've probably had the conversation historically, maybe several times, and you've either got somewhere with it or more likely (in my case) haven't. Either way, unless I'm asked I'm no longer bringing it up (as much as I'd like to, it doesn't get me anywhere)
