So I'm mixed and my entire life I've whitewashed myself (especially in elementary school) cuz people would make fun of me for having interracial parents. I'd never go outside because I didn't want to tan (I'm literally as pale as a ghost now) and I'd always bleach my hair and straighten because I wanted to be like one of the pretty blonde white girls at my school. Now I'm trying to embrace my culture and I really want to try braids/cornrows but I'm kinda afraid cuz of how white I look. I'm starting to get a bit darker but I still look super white and I'm so afraid of culture appropriation. Do you think it's ok for me to try this? I really want to and my dad really wants me to as well cuz he's happy I'm trying to embrace my Jamaican side more but I'm just a little nervous. My friends told me that they can tell that I'm mixed now but idk I'm still worried Oops this is long so no ones probs gonna read it but it's worth a shot:)
@chatapratt76807 жыл бұрын
Kaya S I totally understand. Im not directly mixed but I am lightskinned so I know how self conscious you can feel. I say go ahead and rock those braids. Just because you're half black doesn't mean you aren't apart of black culture and its never too late to start embracing it. Just because cornrows are usually seen on people with darker skin doesn't mean you can't rock them just as well. I hope this gave you the confidence to try wearing braids! 🌟👏🏽👍🏽
@orionsoutro17947 жыл бұрын
Kaya S gurl, do you. I am Asian and Latina and I wear corn rows. Remember!!!!! For every one person who doesn't support and like you, there are 10 other people who are right by your side. BTWWWW, I have friends in Africa who say that over there, they don't give a cap if a white person or someone of another race wears corn rows. It's a HAIRSTYLE. NOTTTTTT a sacred ritual.
@awesomekb137 жыл бұрын
Kaya S you should do it! You're half black it's a part of your culture, it's great that you're trying to embrace that side more.

in africa, if we see non-black people wearing braids we literally don't care. that's a western thing. there are better ways to fight racial injustice than being divisive. as long as you're not mocking a culture, feel free to style your hair as you please!

Question: how do you all feel about Asian girls wearing corn rows. I mean no disrespect, and am asking purely for the sake of being respectful, cause I think it's beautiful and also very practical but know the feeling of wanting to protect something that is unique to your culture
@reizrblade7 жыл бұрын
do it!!! I have braided my friends from different races and cultures hair before. Its a hairstyle. its not disrespectful to wear cornrrows its disrespectful when you are acting like kim k or her braty ass lil sister and try to take someone elses culture and make it your own and try to brand it like you made it.

The problem with this tutorial is .... its def for beginners. You can see the loop where it was added. The correct way to do this is to insert the hair but leave one end out and braid down twice then add the other end in. And dip them in hot water for several seconds(12 to 15)...NOT minutes! lol. #Its hard to explain but Your Welcome...🤗
@marquekander5907 жыл бұрын
When it comes to your hair there is no wrong way how to do it. I'm she has seen other KZbin tutorials and decided she wanted to do the way she is comfortable with. No problem with that at all. Some people prefer knot or knot less, cool either way.

@laneyb89117 жыл бұрын
StandByChambers _ pf course people will lol. As long as you are respectful and such iy shouldnt be too much. People will hate on you for whatever though. I corn row my hair at night to avoid using heat, one day I was late for work and wore it out and boy did I get some dirty looks and some whispers about me being white/hispanic with corn rows 😕 you will get hate, its about if you think you can handle it..they are so beautiful and practical though
