A lot of mechanics in Warcraft 3 are distilled from stereotypical fantasy themes and tropes. Melee units usually have heavy armor. Think of it as "plate" armor, even though the unit visually is equipped differently. They deal Normal damage, which may as well be called melee damage. Ranged units usually have Medium armor, essentially leather armor. They deal piercing damage of course. Flying units have Light armor, I guess because they must be light enough to fly. So it's flyer armor. Casters have "Unarmored" armor. They are supposed to be merely dressed with magical clothes, no armor. Magic damage explains itself Buildings have Fortified armor, siege engines deal Siege damage. These are made to interact with each other mostly. Then Warcraft follows the usual Mage>Warrior>Archer>Mage triangle. Magic damage beats Heavy armor, Normal beats Medium, Piercing beats Unarmored. On top, Archer beats flyers, so Piercing kills Light armor. Siege of course beats Fortified. The problem begins with the many exceptions to these otherwise simple rule set. Some make sense, like Raiders having Siege as they are supposed to get in quickly, attack buildings to get gold from Pillage and retreat. Defense buildings have heavy armor to be easier to take down early game with base melee units. Late game flyers are supposed to ravage infantry formations, so they have Magic damage to better deal with Heavy armor. An then we get things like Huntresses with Unarmored armor type for some reason, Skeletal Mages doing Piercing damage, Mountain Giants with Medium armor, Spell Breakers with Normal damage, etc. I would arge that these exceptions come from balance decisions, even though at first glance they clash with the initial impressions their role and design may suggest. The game doesn't make it easier either by failing to convey information such as damage type or its effectiveness on a certain armor type until you stop to examine the unit.

I don't know if you already have videos on this topic but I'd love to see you explain how grouping works (with keyboard and shortcuts) and how you manage your army with it. I remember once you explained that you even put buildings in groups in order to macro without the need to come back to your base. I came to realize that I have always played without these techniques (and it's a mess when you need to micro in your base), and without multiple commands.

I think he plays control groups 1, 2, 3 for units, 4 for all types of barracks (tab to choose the one you need at the time), and 5 for Town Hall. He said that you can use F1, F2 and F3 for hero select but sometimes he uses control group 1 with heroes and then tabs through the spells or maybe clicks to control them, not sure.

I have been googling to find something like this for sooooo long. Been watching for a long time but finally started playing and this has been the hardest thing to learn. Sure you can look at damage type, but that isn't always a guaranteed correct answer.

@09:27 -- Chimeras should not be in the list of counters to Flying Machines, unless you somehow also have Fiends or Raiders, because Chimeras can't attack other air units.

Yeah, the 'heavy air with magic dmg' answer was valid, but I think he lost his train of thought when he said chims. Wyrms and gryphons were the better examples to pick out of that category

I main human, so i know very well wich units counter human units. But ofc i want the same video for other races : FIrst : like how do i counter an undead who camped their base and do 1000 frost wyrm ? dragon hawk cant kill them with one spell and they just focus your hero, even if you have invul potion. Second : how to counter elf late game ? Because rifle counter early and mid elf game, but then are useless against knight. And if you go knight, they kill all units with archer and dryad slow

I think a better format would be how to counter every race with (INSERT RACE YOU WANT TO PLAY) and make 4 videos about it. Like I am trying to learn the game through undead only atm and I do not know anything else. I have no clue about units and the counters. Dont even know if you asked me: Which one of the units you are fighting is a mountainking. I wouldnt know how to tell you. So I have a long way but having a dedicated race counter guide would be so helpful.

Orc has every unit available at Tier 2 the idea is to not let your opponent get too late game T3 such as mass heavy air, orc is an interactive race you should be causing them enough grief that they can’t expand or build 3 gryphon aviaries etc
