It's good practice to encode only a unique product ID in a barcode (e.g. for product identification in stores or supermarkets). When scanning such a barcode, the point of sale system (the computer) retrieves the product description and additional information like the price from the stores database. Usually, all products sold online or in stores need such a unique identification number (distributed and maintained by GS1 - see gs1.org). Note: you may encode the product description in the barcode itself as well (use 2D codes with more data capacity for such a purpose), but please be aware that you need to replace the codes if the encoded information changes. This depends on the courier service, they are using different codes. But please be aware: Just creating a barcode which will be theoretically scannable by the courier's scanner will NOT work. Parcel barcodes need to be created by the IT system of the courier service (the parcel number needs to be known by the courier's IT system). Hope this helps.
