In this project I will show you how I turned an old bookshelf speaker into an awesome portable boombox. It features a battery run-time of 100h, a battery level indicator, USB charging ports and a 20W amp. Those features make it perfect for all outdoor trips. Let's get started!

Hey! Great video, altough there are some thing I want to point out that might improve your project. You should have left the polyfill inside, as it keeps the sound from bouncing off the walls. Also, the battery is pretty big, so adding even more polyfill will restore the speaker to it's tuning frequency and give you lower bass. You should have at least checked that the crossover filter has the same frequency as the original one. And you should absolutely make sure that the whole thing is airtight, so add some foam seals on that back door. Other ideeas might also include a bluetooth receiver or an Arduino so that you can play music from an USB drive and some volume controls. Oh, and that speaker seems underpowered, I would have used a bigger amp, especially since most amps distort really bad at max volume. Other than that, great project! I know sound quality is not the primary goal, but this are just some simple stuff you could do that help improve it.

I think you did a wonderful job on that. In the interest of keeping the size down, I use a monophonic set up with the whole cabinet, devoted to a single isobaric set up with double woofers bolted face to face, wired out of phase, in a half size cabinet.

Hey Great Scott, I think you may tune this circuit up by ensure proper cooling of the amplifier IC. I don't think it's heat dissipation is high enough to handle such occuring heat, when the speaker is used at a high Volume e.g. for a party. But beside my tipp, the project is awesome. I estimated that you would integrate a possibility for solar charging of the Speaker, maybe for a festival or so. Keep the good work going - Greatings from Germany!

@Wilson84KS
@Wilson84KS 6 жыл бұрын
I don't get why using hinges at all if everything inside is glued with strong glue so it will break if you try to get it out, and all connections are soldered. I'm screwing everything together without any toolless "service openings" but still use plugs and also screw down the pcb's, so in case something is wrong I can take everything apart easily. Anyway a good project.

tim you said: "Emil Racovita or Just 3d-printed hinges" LOL Sure! Let's all buy an expensive 3D printer, the pinnacle of hobby geekness, to print out something we've been making quite well for over 3500 years! Reality check: Your local hardware store has better looking hinges for a buck or two... Go ahead. Treat yourself to the real thing! ;-) Just kidding! (...and a little jealous)

You can get a decent 3D printer for less than $200 dollars these days, it's well worth it to have one around these days if you're into projects like this! Between affordable printers and an abundance of free software and tutorials, it's never been a better time to add FDM to your arsenal.

Another great build! I really like the way you explain the circuits. It‘s not too detailed to watch but also enough information to follow along, if you feel like it. One thing, that I noticed in your videos: You tend to emphasize the e when you say „the“. Saying it without that emphasis (like „thö“) would sound a lot more natural :)

How do you know the original speaker was carefully designed? You have researched the specific brand and model or so? There is plenty of audio equipment that was only made to look like audio equipment, without too much engineering in the design. But yes.. Putting the rockwool back is a good idea.
