If you zoom in to 179.9999993°E 3.9122758°S at 1:662 scale there's a break in the imagery basemap which doesn't make for a good vignette.

@@JohnNelsonMaps Yup! The super generous one who shares his genius with the rest of us muggles. (this video ended up recommended by youtube after watching some piracy videos: my GIS world was miles away the first time I saw it, so it's wasn't until a couple weeks later when I saw the theme in GIS that it all clicked). Sorry if my geeking out was awkward, but the community really appreciates what you do for us.

@@wilfdarr Wow, that's so great to hear and generous of you to say. I sure am having a lot of fun making maps and visualizing data so I'm happy to share that.

Clearly the thumbs downs are from angry pirates! For real though, this is very cool. Love the bit at the end about accidental learning ;)

That's all nice and dandy but this stray dot in the Russian Arctic should give a hint at least. It lists incident which happened thousands miles away, at the place with a similar name. Something went wrong with data placing over similarly named locations, isn't it? I wonder if the rest of the data displayed is as much "accurate".
@JohnNelsonMaps4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've noticed with that data some errant positions. You can find the ASAM source at msi.nga.mil/Piracy
@Somalitravel3 жыл бұрын
Now that piracy is gone. Guess what is back. Illegal fishing and waste dumping is back in Somali costal areas. It is easy to use crime data in arcGIs without covering underlying issues.
@JohnNelsonMaps3 жыл бұрын
yes, i agree with your sentiment. there is always an underlying phenomenon driving what we see in a map. maps help us visualize those layers of drivers to ask better questions, and peel back the map to search for the underlying causes as deeply as we can.

"Otherwise it's geographic heresy." We're flattening a sphere. Until we are working in full 3d, we are all heretics.

@@JohnNelsonMaps Lol. Thank you. I actually have a slide in a .ppt for my sailing friends on why a nautical mile doesn't usually equal one degree of latitude (which is what most sailing and aviation courses teach), and why they should use the scale on the bottom of the chart, but I couldn't remember the proper terminology.
