planforabundance.com/ - Use code KZbin20 to get 20% off the Productive Planting Plan Online Course. Get your notepads out because in this video I will show you how to create a vegetable garden planting plan to ensure food abundance throughout the year. Very often gardeners create a yearly plan but this makes it very hard to capture change through the months and plan for succession sowing. Here is the contents list I mentioned so you can re-navigate the video easily after watching:
-Benefits and context of a monthly plan 0:33
-What about crop rotation? 4:52
-Creating the outline 5:45
-Adding helpful keys 6:46
-List your staple crops 7:59
-Optional research 9:21
-Starting with the first month 10:12
-Continuing with the months 12:45
-When it’s time for succession planting 15:06
-Knowing where to stop and tips 18:15
-Using a calendar 19:10

I am so excited to share this video with you because it is something that I know will help so many of you unlock the ability to almost instantly improve your succession planting and food abundance from your garden. And I am going to start it off by giving you the golden bit of information which is this:
Don’t create an annual planting plan. Instead, create a simplified month-to-month plan and there are so many benefits to this and I have been using this method for a couple of years now and I tell you, the thought of moving back to an annual plan after seeing how amazing this type of plan is, fills me with horror.
I know monthly may sound like a lot of work but trust me when I say it is so much easier than you think. In this video you will also learn how to transfer the tasks and steps in your planting plan onto a calendar, so you have the most efficient, and perhaps the easiest way of staying organised and in control this year.
The issue with an annual plan is that is it very hard to see the change of the garden throughout the year, and as a result it makes it very difficult to plan succession growing which is planting one crop as soon as another crop is harvested so you get two different crops from the same area, in the same year, thus maximising the food potential from a set space.
A monthly plan allows you to foresee future changes in your garden, such as when space becomes available. By being able to plan in a way that captures the change so easily, means that the potential from your garden increases right away, and at the end of the day, it makes life so much easier for you because all you need are quick glances to see what’s happening and to make sure you are on track.

This is great - I'm sold! One question though... do you have other videos explaining tips for designing your annual veg garden in the first place? I'm at the very early stages and I'm thinking rectangular beds are easier. But I'm not sure if there's anything I'm missing. Also - do you sell the permie ethics sweatshirt you're wearing?!

This kind of quality information is why you are on a very short list of experienced gardeners I chose as the direction I wanted for my family’s garden. There’s a dizzying amount of information out there but this is a realistic approach and in line with the way I want to have a relationship with the food and land that I expect to nourish my family. Thank you for being a rich source of information and delivering it clearly and thoroughly.

Thanks for the Video! Sorry for butting in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Proutklarton Alive Products Plan (probably on Google)? It is a good one of a kind product for creating your greenhouse of saffron anywhere in the world without the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my work buddy finally got astronomical results with it.

Have been a fan for about 6 months and have just found this video and found it so uplifting! Being retired for 3 years and now I am HAVING to try growing our own food I was so anxious on where to start and in what order until seeing this. Due to health reasons it was unlikely I would be able to DIG a garden so when I came across Huw and Co talking about no dig it has given me a new enthusiasm for gardening. I have 2 dalek compost bins already full so will start off with 1 or 2 beds of cardboard on grass and compost. Please keep them coming.

So in May we need to build a wigwam (16:15). I thought "what in the world is a wigwam for?" My first thought was in case any native Americans happened to be passing by my property. Then I went to your main page and put "wigwam" in the search line. Makes sense now. LOL. I learned MORE than one thing from this video.

Thank you so much Huw. You have completely demystified the whole succession thing. I was losing the will to live with the bare soil patches in my my little plot for long periods of time. I watched many of your video on no dig, as a gardener of 64 I needed to change my usual tack and make things easier for myself. I couldn't bare not growing things. No dig works really well for me and it so much easier to spread successions in a smaller area, but the mixing of crops and knowing when to sow things a ready to transfer wasn't very synchronized. I feel truly enlightened, see your never to old to learn. Keep up the good work, as i'm very interested to see how the chop and drop goes.

Because I also have several fruit trees, perennial bushes and chickens, I will be adding a couple of areas to the side of the beds (Crops to Harvest and Maintenance Tasks) so I have everything in one place and I don't end up being overwhelmed by tasks and I make sure my tools and garden beds are ready for the next crop.

Loved this video! I've been making a monthly plan and I'll never do a yearly one again either. I use a spreadsheet, though, with each month separate. Then rows telling me when to start a crop indoors and when to plant it out, or when to direct sow. Another row with the germination time, another with the harvest time, another with notes on what'll follow that crop. Then general notes about it, and finally a row reminding me where I bought the seeds or plants, in case I have any questions if I bought them elsewhere. That way I see everything at a glance and have a definite month-by-month plan. It works wonderfully for me. I still have an insane amount of food growing out there now in February, so much that I'm going to have to get some family, friends and neighbors over here to take away all the excess they can use, so I can start the beds fresh for this season. I spend the cold season, when there's not much to do out there but harvest, planning, planning and planning. I never plan TOO inflexible though, since sometimes I'll change my mind and think, "You know, I think I'll put the second crop of broad beans over there instead of here.", haha! I really, really like your way of planning, though, it's a lot more visual and will help a lot more people than my spreadsheet method. And yes, definitely going to buy your book. The first one was wonderful, so I'm looking forward to this one. :)

I have always enjoyed gardening but wasn't making the most of my limited space. I completed this course and it was freeing for me. I have a plan now. It's all laid out for me to follow along and tuck things in at the right time, and move on to something else. Yes, I know things will not always go smoothly but this has removed a ton of stress for me. And I truly enjoyed the planning process. Thank you!

I'm rather new to the gardening for food game, I've grown ornamental plants and flowers for years! This was such a helpful video, and it was presented so clearly, that I was able to understand how to make a monthly plan. I struggled this year, I was late for many crops, (everything turned out just fine) but I love being able to think month by month and know what needs to be done ahead of time. I like thinking that way, I'm a planner. This really made sense to me. This year was an experiment as well in knowing what I do want to grow. Now I know how I can plan it all out, and hopefully not miss out on timeframes and to make the most of the beds I do have (We are already planning on expanding our 3 raised beds to at least be 6) Thank you so much!

I usually map my garden for spring, summer, fall-winter (I use my greenhouse, a hoop house, and cold frames). But I am trying to transition this year to a more productive plan--with succession and intercropping. The challenge for me is to plan ahead--what transplants do I need to go in next? It's tricky when you've not done it before. I made a master list on Excel with all the info I need for each plant. I want to put that into this planting plan. I think this is the next piece of the puzzle I need. Thanks for such excellent videos! I'm always learning something new from you!

I’m in the states and although I don’t have a big area I am excited for the new veggie bed this year! This monthly planning is brilliant as I have a lot of ideas but till now it hasn’t really come together! Thank you so much! I’m going to draw mine on paper and then photo copy pages for a three ring binder! This is more cardio rehab for me as I had a bypass three years ago May! I can’t wait for that first harvest!!

I like this. I am a market gardener. Last year was my first year selling at the farmers market and I know there were things I wanted to do differently like succession planting. Just going month to month like I do my budget makes it look less complicated. I am also going to try to like the three sisters to max out my 1/3 of an acre land

This is such a great idea Huw, I never really make any plans as I'm never sure how much space I will have so I just sow the seed and cram it in somewhere but once my veg plot is up and running I will definitely use this idea, thanks very much. Take care, Bethan 😊

Great information! Thank you for taking time to show us how to be more efficient in our gardening efforts! Keep up the good work! My current "free" project involves building a growing rack for my 1020 trays from cedar poles out of our woods. I just had to buy the screws for it. It should hold up to 20 trays. I will add LED lighting for each of the 5 shelf racks so my baby plants will get enough light. I'm starting most of my plants in my house this year. I'm taking Charles Dowding's advice on how he sets out baby plants. I notice you also do this, and both of you have such good success my husband and I are making the switch from direct sowing (except for carrots and parsnips and corn). Thanks again for your help! Blessings always, Janet and Dane

Very smart way to plan..I have 2 new allotments plus my own garden so now I don't have to keep everything in my head and find out that I've missed the boat and not started my seeds off when I should have. Thanks Huw, and love your hoodie by the way (on my Permaculture Design Course at the moment) 👌🥰🌱
