How to Create a Single Column Hierarchy Drill Down Drill Up with Parameter Actions

Hi Andy! Firstly, THANK YOU for yet another useful tip for all of us. Secondly, I tried doing it using just one Parameter and two calculated fields and it was working fine as yours (except for the vertical row label part as I was not focusing on that). What I did is:- 1. Created a Parameter "Toggle Category and Sub-Category Parameter" as Boolean with default as TRUE 2. Created a calculated field "Toggle Category and Sub-Category Parameter Value" to toggle the boolean value i.e set it to FALSE (if TRUE) else TRUE. 3. Created another calculated field as "Category or Sub-Category Value" to return SUB-CATEGORY dimension (if above is TRUE) or CATEGORY dimension (if above is FALSE) 4. Finally, created the update parameter action for parameter in 1 and target field to 2 (before that I dragged the calculated field at 2 to details shelf. Your expert comments on this please!

It’s hard for me to say. It sounds like the action isn’t configured properly. If you set it up as a worksheet action, then put the sheet on a dashboard, you need to change it to a dashboard action.

Hi Andy! I came across this video while looking for a way to create a drill down hierarchy view of KPIs and teams involved for my project. Is there anything I need to be aware of if my categories and subcategories are from 3 or 4 different sources as long as I rename/give alias to the categories to match? Currently I'm using blending to connect the sources to show more on a dashboard via filtering but i would like to replace my filters with parameters that you have demonstrated.

Hi Andy, thank you for the detailed explanation. Question: Can we drill down Category while selecting from Filter List of Values (1. Furniture 2. Office Supplies 3. Technology) ? I have found a bug while testing following is the scenario, Scenario: Drill down to any category for example furniture then drill up then the select blank header it will make dashboard blank because we have not added that condition in the "Category or Sub-Category Filter " So according to me, the missing condition is : OR ( [Sub-Category]=[Category Prameter] AND [category or Subcategory Parameter]='Category' ) Now we have to add logic in "Category or Sub-Category" calculated field also, I am confused about what should we add so according to me clicking on the blank header, should remain on category level.

I keep getting "Result of a level of detail calculation must be an aggregate" when i create the second calculated field. Both fields are strings. i am trying this using MFR and MODEL. Manufacturer and Model. I have read numerous articles on this and I cannot figure out why im getting this error. Please help.

Andy- you are a godsend and your videos are truly amazing. I’m still a beginner ( 7 weeks into tableau), and my mind still gets lost in a daze with understanding terms, functions, and just the basics of tableau. Your action must not be set up properly. Double check the settings.

This happens to me and in the video at 8:30 also. It's when the Category or Sub-Category Param changes to "Category" but the Category Param is still a sub-category value (since clicking the blank header doesn't update the Category Param).

Answer is yes. Just add additional lines to calculated fields and remember to set another nested "and for the sub-category" for filter 2. (correct if I'm wrong or if a better way)

Hello Andy, thanks for this great video it's really very useful. Can we use the same method to add few more dimensions eg category>>subcategory>>order number ( or any third column) And the header should display vertically the category and subcategory name when we are at the third level eg order number, would really appreciate your comments on the above, I am stuck with this requirement.

That means that you don’t have an aggregate in the second part of the LOD. After the : in the LOD you must have some sort of aggregation.
