All my life, I thought I hated succulents because they were too barren and blah. Turns out I never saw any that were grouped in an actual creative DESIGN. This is so beautiful. Such an inspiration! I'm definitely going to add a rock garden to my yard now.

Yes! If it's any consolation, those don't thrive here in Southern CA. They seldom make it through our hot summers.

We had just bought a corner lot house and the garden needs a lot of work. We just finished clearing bushes including 20 roses from our front yard and we found several boulders buried underneath huge agave plants that haven’t been pruned or taken care of for a long time. I am trying to get inspiration for a new succulent rock garden and this gave a lot of ideas. Thank you!

Absolutely gorgeous! For decades I have wanted to recreate the mass plantings of succulents that drape the landscape in CAL. My most favorite thing to do while visiting is go for a walk by myself around some random neighborhood searching for succulents. Its better for me to do that alone because I tend to forget I am right in the middle of a conversation, stop and stare in awe while the other person keeps on walking..and talking. Obviously I love succulents but I am hesitant to put them in the ground since its such a harsh environment here in the desert of Southeastern Arizona. We live in a cabin on 8 acres out in the desert which has a little private mountain covered with all kinds of cactus & desert shrubs. I am turning it into one massive wildflower/vegetable garden. I want it to look like it is overflowing with life, literally pouring down the sides and flowing into our valley mesquite food forest. When we moved here the whole property was covered in tumbleweeds. Most of the 200+ mesquite trees and shrubs were way overgrown and half dead. My boyfriend and I have worked very hard over the last year to clean it up but now its time to make it beautiful. After watching many of your awesome videos I think I am finally ready to take the plunge and make my dreams come true..I just decided on the perfect spot to showcase my little collection of succulents..Ohh yahh its happening today..no, more like its happening right now..I wish I could just show you what you have inspired me to do..you would love it, I hope.

Thank you so much for sharing this! It was very enlightening. I made my first attempt with succulents trying to do the same thing, but silly me, I spaced them out like perennials and waited forever for them to grow and fill the space. When they finally did, it looked off, so I pulled them all out to try again. :/ I just couldn't figure out how to get them to look so elegantly full. Now I get it! Thank you so much, I appreciate you posting and Laura demonstrating it!

I am in the UK and just created a small rock garden in the corner of my otherwise-boring, flat, geometrically-shaped front garden to give more of a 3-dimensional aspect to it and was looking for more ideas. Alpine plants dotted around protruding rocks with a covering of small, white limestone, chippings to show up the developing greenery and coloured flowers. It is placed in the corner of a level, bark-covered area about 9 ft x 12 ft with a few planted shrubs. I would like to do the same thing as you but being in NW UK, with cold, damp, wet weather conditions much of the year (unlike the very SW corner of Cornwall and Devon) it looks difficult. However, a quick search online tell me I can try to cover them in winter to protect from frost or put in pots and bring indoors for winter - not practical in my little house. However, I have much enjoyed watching you demonstrate your obvious skills in creating such a beautiful Succulent "Pocket Garden", an unfamiliar over here. Many thanks from across the "Pond" for your interesting video.
