By any chance have you ever run into the problem of your links disappearing once you close your document??? I've done links like this for several years now; however, all of the sudden I can't get Adobe to keep them. I've tried on two different computers for hours now. I've tried countless times now where I add the links, confirm they work, save, close, re-open and no links. :-(

When you add the files to the PDF after the Table of Contents page, why are there no bookmarks created?

It sounds like the metadata from your original files have been removed so that it isn't bringing in the file name when you combine PDFs, which will create the bookmark. You may have to create your own bookmarks. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate you! Good luck :-)

11:00 URGENT QUESTION::: I followed your instructions and made invisible links from my 800-page Appellate Appendix-List to the documents within it. But after I split the binder into three volumes, all the list-links disappeared. It had taken me around 5 hours!!! Can you give me any advise on that please. Great question! However, the answer is no, you cannot perform these actions in Adobe Reader. Adobe Acrobat Pro is a paid product. You can look into a monthly option, which I believe is $15 per month, or you can purchase the program, which I believe starts at $180. I would not be able to do my job as efficiently as I do without using Adobe Acrobat Pro. It is worth every penny. Thanks for stopping by, watching, and asking this great question. I appreciate you! I would like to ask you to save the document (PDF file) to your Desktop or a folder and them open the file and then demonstrate. I just want to see how the PDF document it looks and how the Table of Contents works after being opened from a directory on your system and also with the PDF viewing application that is used (the default) by people who do not have Adobe Acrobat Pro. I can see that you're using a Mac, so if you would, please allow us to see how the PDF performs from within the Mac's "Preview" application.

Why is the TOC Title style so important? Is it one you created? Or is it, like when in word and creating a TOC, the headings are what is used to create the TOC? Or is it just to make it look nice? Thanks for the video.

Honestly, it just makes it look nice. As long as the documents is converted from Word to Adobe, you should have no problem creating the link from the text.

But then I had also applied a header to each section in the word document, so ended up when I went to make the bookmarks, it had already made bookmarks based off of those... sigh... learning it, tho, learning it! The Table of Contents is not CREATED in Abobe - the TOC is converted from Word and LINKS are added in Adobe. I want to make the TOC from the bookmarks.

I agree, paralegals that train me tend to not go into the details. They just say what needs to be done but don't show you how to do it. They have a scarcity mindset in thinking that if they train you well they will become replaceable. However, a good trainer is much better than having one well-trained paralegal, but they don't get that and so they don't try to train others well.

Here's a little secret... if you have the Acrobat Word plugin, use Word's headings 1 - 9 to build your TOC headings. Click the Acrobat tab. Click Preferences, select the Bookmarks tab and check all the heading styles you used to create the TOC headings. e.g. Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. Click OK to save your options. Click Create PDF (button to the left of Preferences). Acrobat will produce a beautifully bookmarked document based on the heading styles you selected in seconds. All you have to do is create the hyperlink. That just saved you a ton of steps! I also add a return link on each of the sections that links the reader back to the TOC. This saves the reader from having to scroll to the top of the document every time they want to get back to the TOC.

For the CC, you will need to turn that off on your end as the viewer. There are 2 ways to do it, click the settings wheel in the bottom right of the video (might have to hover to get it to show up), then turn subtitles off. If that slider is set to off and you still see them, click the CC button which should toggle your saved preferences for language on and off. It was such great info, I hope this helps you!
