A good point TrueGreen7 made is, the concept should evolve with the Pokémon.

If you want to have an example of a weird object/ concept for a fakemon, there was literally a time when I was having a conversation about laser printing and midway through speaking I had the urge to make a fakemon based on laser printing. I was very happy with it, and I somehow managed to make up a bunch of “lore” for it. Sometimes the weird ideas can yield some decent results. Amazing video btw.

Oh, just what I needed! I'm not making fakemons, but I want to make a new game with monsters heavily inspired from Pokemons. Just to get started, I designed the concept and gameplay of the "starter" monsters, and then I tried to design one of them. As I finished the design rough, I looked at it, and thought "Hmmmm yep, that's just a regular birb" :') Up until now, I've really just been designing human characters, so I thought of training up my monster designing skills by making fake Mega evolutions. The main thing I've noticed after my failed design was that I have a tendency to make them too realisticly shaped. Like, the first Pokemon I'm trying to make a fake mega evolution of, Chimecho, is litterally just a ball with a rectangle tail. Also, I'm struggling a huge lot for coming up with names. It took me many, many hours to finally come up with a name I'm satisfied of for these starter monsters. Will you be going over how to come up with a good name as well?

While i'm not great at drawing, I adore coming up with concepts for Fakemon. I even randomly created a Fakemon idea today. To put it simply, it's a small beetle that looks similar to the Prickly Leaf Beetle; it's also inspired by small brick toys I used to play with called Stickle Bricks where you would be able to stick them together to create larger shapes. Furthermore, this little beetle Fakemon can come in so many colours, not only inspired by the Stickle Bricks being many colours but also another beetle called the Rainbow-Leaf Beetle however, that beetle specifically has lots of colours on it but this beetle Fakemon can just appear as many colours. I took the idea of the Stickle Bricks attaching together to form bigger shapes and made this beetle have a Swarming Form where many of these little colourful beetles would attach themselves to each other and become a large entity like Wishiwashi's School Form. It would look like a giant Rainbow-Leaf Beetle colourscheme wise but, it's overal appearance is the same shape as the 3rd and final beetle for this design, the Minotaur Beetle. The Pokemon is called Breetle, which comes from the words Brick, Beetle and Brittle (Which refers to something being hard but easily breakable.) This fit the pokemon well since it's a pure bug type and bugs do have hard exoskeletons but, since they're bugs, they will be destroyed easily. Also, when learning about the word Brittle, that's what reminded me of Wishiwashi and so, I made this pokemon have a Swarming Form to mimic this. And to top it all off, I wanted to create pokemon that could've been in a UK inspired Region (Or Galar if you want to include that) and everything I listed for inspiration was UK related. The Stickle Brick toys were invented in the UK and the Prickly Leaf Beetle, Rainbow-Leaf Beetle and Minotaur Beetle all can somewhat be found in the UK too.

(DISCLAIMER: Please don’t mind me using the word Pokemon for Fakemon 😭) These tips are really helpful! I prefer and consider myself much better at conceptualising than designing and rendering, but even still these tips were super useful. One tip I have mostly for practise as opposed to seriously making a design although it can still be used for that is to limit oneself in some way. Or more accurately, to start with an answer and develop questions from that answer which you then answer and repeat the process. One example is a design prompt/challenge I participated in recently (like 2 days ago) where each participant was randomly assigned a move to make this Pokémon’s signature move. I got Mud Sport. So let’s look at the questions I asked and answers I got. Q: What move? A: Mud Sport (duh but just restating - btw called Mud Game in Japanese). Q: What does Mud Sport do? A: Ground type non-damaging move that halves power of Electric type moves - We can infer this means the battlefield is covered in mud Q: What is likely to cover a battlefield in mud? A: An animal that rolls around in mud. (Side note - I made a mud-covered form and mud-less form for the Pokémon because it makes logical sense) Q: Which animals roll around in mud? A: Elephants, Boars, Bison, Buffalo, etc Q: Which of these could most easily cover a battlefield in mud? A: Elephants because they can spray mud around with their trunks - at least in cartoons they do that with water Q: Why do elephants roll around in mud? A: To ward off bugs, among other things Q: Are there any bugs that would be weakened by this move? (i.e. Electric type bugs) A: Yes! Vikavolt. This means that we can make Vikavolt a predatory bug to this pal. Q: This is all fine and dandy, but we have to remember that this move is a game or sport, not just a “mud cover.” So how can we do that? A: After looking up sports that involve mud, there’s one called swamp football. I’m gonna be honest, I only looked at the name of the sport and decided that the Pokémon launches balls of mud from its trunk as a festivity/game/social activity but I probably should have researched more Q: So this Pokémon has a defense mechanism that is also a celebration. Is there any other inspiration tied to this? (perhaps a human celebration that is said to originate as a defense against a god or monster or creature of the like) A: Yes! Lunar New Year’s fireworks are heavily tied to the myth of Nian the Dragon, who is said to be scared away by the fireworks which is why it’s done. (This is all from what I remember of the myth so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong!) Q: Is there any way to include this new inspiration in the design? A: Yes! By making the Pokémon shoot the mud globules up, akin to fireworks, it can add that inspiration. Adding firework patterns on the body also adds a level of interest to the Pokémon’s main body while not covered by mud that I didn’t really have a plan for until now. Q: Is there any biological reason the Pokémon would have for having the bright firework design on its body and for shooting the mud up? A: Yes! The shooting the mud up just makes sense as an efficient way to cover as much space as it can with mud as the mud would fall and splatter on itself which would ward off Vikavolt more. The bright colours are seen as a sign of danger in nature, so they would cause bigger predators (e.g. Pyroar) to back off. Funnily enough, the bright firework designs may also look like bright flowers to Vikavolt, which would probably not attract them as they don’t seem to be the pollinating kind of bug but we can pretend they are🤫 which brings it all full circle! Q: Now that we know that the Pokémon is both built to ward off big predators and a mud-firework-cannon thing, is there anything else we can add to the design (we aren’t at the design yet but I mean add to our plan for the design) to reinforce both of those? A: Yes! By giving the build a more Copperajah than Cufant body type, we can make it look more intimidating to both the audience and big predators. Still has to look happy though because the whole design concept is based off a move literally called Mud Game. We will also give it tusks to further add to the intimidation which may seem like a given but Pokémon spiders have 6 legs sometimes so not necessarily. It will also be single stage to ensure this big strong look is maintained throughout the Pokémon’s life and to give me one less thing to design 😂. Finally, to emphasise the fireworks cannon, we’ll give it stubby but wide legs, a more oval than circle body (already discussed but shh) and a girthy trunk angled upward so that, when looked at from the side, it has the silhouette of a cartoon cannon on wheels. That’s all the questions and answers, so I ended up with a fairly simple concept - a mud firework cannon elephant, but it’s at least got conceptual depth if you look closer. I think this question and answer method really allows you to iron out any plot holes in the design if there are any and if you care about them. And of course by giving yourself unusual limitations it widens the variety of fakemon you can make. For those curious, the Fakemon’s name is Terrebrate (Clean form with the firework designs on display and messy form where the Pokémon is covered in mud so the firework designs can’t be seen). It’s from Terra (Roman goddess of the Earth to reference the mud aspect), terror, elephant and celebrate. This is because it’s an elephant that uses mud to celebrate and strike terror into predators. It is pure normal type in clean form and gains the ground type in messy form. It is the Adaptation Pokemon as everything about it can be explained as a biological adaptation. That’s about it, hope my design practise process helps somebody 😭

10/10 tips in my opinion, though the part where we use myths and legends is tricky for me. I acctually made a few Fakemon myself but since my region is based on Malaysia(Where I live), it just barely works since Malaysia has alot and I mean alot of ghost stories. I just eventually accepted it and just had 40% ghost types. Fun story but still 10/10 tips.

This video popped up in my recommendations. This series is rather useful actually. Even in my own endeavors of making a pokemon inspired world, these series of videos were handy. Though, there is some things I'd like to ask. First, where are some good sources for mythology? Second, do all monsters need to be intricate and complex in terms of design and reference to real life mythology? This is just my gut instinct, but it seems like a lot of people love deep and compelling monsters with lore and connections.
@froopyart
@froopyart 9 ай бұрын
I think there are some wiki websites dedicated just to mythology, so just wandering on those is a good resource. And the amount of complexity and lore is fairly subjective, but on the whole I think people make things a bit more complicated than they need to be. It's better to convey the personality of a pokemon over getting in as many details and references.
@CaptiousClown
@CaptiousClown 9 ай бұрын
@@froopyartThanks! The reason why I ask about the complexity of a monsters name etymology and reference, is due to how deep Lockstin & Gnoggin go into a Pokémon's origins. It seems almost daunting to me, because I feel like everything I have to make needs to be deep.

@Sherrom not necessarily. And if you are ever worried that they are too simple, you can pull in a bit of inspiration from elsewhere and mix them together. So adding a distinct personality or a cilultural reference or something.

Why are all tutorials focused around _drawing_ fakemon, and not designing them? Drawing is easy. Just draw the thing that you thought of, and get it as close as possible to what you envisioned. Repeat until satisfied. I want to know about concept, stat distributions, movesets, and type distributions. The stuff that actually makes it a _pokémon,_ and not just some random creature made in an imitation of the Sugimori style.
