I'm addicted to color but I have lately become interested in black and white. I have an old copy of Nik Silver Effex, and I've been trying it out on some of my photos. I love the effect. When I can afford the newer program, I'll get it.
@jamiermathlin3 күн бұрын
if you have Silver Efex Pro 2 or newer, no need to change, the presets are just as good, yes, you do get more adjustments in the newer version, but the main effects remain un-changed !
@fenraven3 күн бұрын
@@jamiermathlin That's how it seemed to me. My old copy seems to work quite well, and it's the one Google was giving away free not too long ago. I picked it up then. I do love what it can do to a B&W photo!

Excellent run through your process. You filled in some gaps in my approach and highlighted some ways I hadn’t considered, thanks. One cheeky note. Where the bin man was removed there is a random bit of horizontal rail not going to a post. Once you see its odd. 😂

Thanks for the comment, and your eagle eyes, I did not see that piece of railing during the edit, but now you have noted it, I cannot unsee it 😀 thank you...

The black and white looks fantastic Jamie. I like how you take the time to explain your process. I have learnt to use radial and linear gradients in my general photography. Even done a few day to night shots from the inspiration from your videos.

I personally prefer Silver Efex as I feel it give more latitude for adjustments to film, grain, and potential for boarders. However many great tips and tricks, keep up the good work.

Fantastic video Jamie. Love your B & W conversion, given me a few pointers as I have Silver Efex ( the original free version ) Have to say though, your colour image is amazing. Your attention to detail is without compromise , and it shows in the final edit. Well done.

thank you very informative. Why did you change from lasso to remove too?
@jamiermathlin13 күн бұрын
Just to decrease the number of tokens I use, the remove tool does not consume tokens, where as generative fill does 🙂

I am just an amateur photographer. I am of the opinion that even with digital cameras, the use of B & W contrast filters is useful. May I ask you your opinion on that?
@jamiermathlin15 күн бұрын
If you do not prefer to post-process your images on your computer and prefer to work with the image straight from the camera, then contrast filters are a very useful accessory, however, if you do post-process your images, then there is no need for filters, everything is possible in post 😀thanks for the question.

Nice as always Jamie. It may not be your style but have you ever tried to replicate pictorialism? They say it can't be reproduced digitally. I love the style at any rate.
@jamiermathlin15 күн бұрын
Hi Nick, that is an interesting concept. Generally (as you know) I do not include people in my images, and pictorialism tends to follow a person-based approach to the image, however, I have seen non-people-related images and it can be quite a feat to pull off. I will do some research and have a think 😀

It’s okay for you to use third party software which would choose for those of us that want to watch the cost of software for black and white please
@jamiermathlin15 күн бұрын
Hi Simon, As you can see in the video I explained how the black and white could be processed in Lightroom first, before showing Silver Efex, as I agree with you we need to be mindful of the cost for all the different pieces of software. The advantage of Silver Efex from the DXO Nik Collection is that it is a one-time purchase, no subscription nonsense, yours forever 😀
