This particle system has many parameters that I covered in the tutorial. By increasing the number of particles, widening the X and Y range for generating particles, and altering the velocity value, you can produce any effect you want. Be sure to carefully review the entire tutorial.

Try using Layer > Time> -Freeze on last frame....if you want to slow to a stop, keyframe the time keys using rescale time. This is off the cuff so some phrasing may be incorrect. HTH
