OMG!! There's 0 chance that I've noticed these were miniature sets without the bts. MIND-BLOWING. I think Sebastian just created a new level of filmmaking and a new way beginners can approach the big film look. Now, no need to scout for locations, no need to prepare a rocket to shoot on the moon(LOL) and less VFX/CGI. I personally love the Canyon set which looks amazing and realistic. Love it when you guys make videos like this.

@janfranklin52693 жыл бұрын
I don't agree. Many of them lacked the motion to make them feel realistic. The winter set looked especially fake. The wall didn't look like a wall. The trees were to uniform and again, didn't move. Real trees move- always.
@Kharmazov6 ай бұрын
@@janfranklin5269 Well it was basically a wargaming terrain quality so no wonder. IMHO the scale was of the miniatures was far to small for such close up shots. Something more like 1/24 or even bigger would give much better effect.

Oh, wow, this brings back memories, to the 'good old days' before CGI entered photography. I was an expert creating realistic miniature-sets, really loved to create the strangest scenes. If I nowadays show people my work from those days, nobody believes it was done without CGI. My favourite one is the 'blade runner'. The other shots are great too, but they are more like a proof of skill. For the 'blade runner' you need that little bit extra, not only to be very skilled, you need a touch of magic too :)

It is a challenge to just pick one scene; they were all inspiring and masterfully rendered. I would say, from an educational (DIY) perspective, that the Canyon scene stood out. It was good to get a sense of not only table-top prop production but also what could be done in post with green-screen to really manage the dramatic setting and take it over the top. No one would believe that it was a DIY project in a controlled environment. Beautiful. Thank you, Sebastian. Thank you, Artlist for promoting this talent and making it so accessible.

Wow, these DIY miniature sets are mindblowing. What he says about having top quality shots even with your phone is true, I would like to suggest even a potential one-up to that: now with the 3d scanning capabilities of the LiDAR scanners (or the more pro scanning software that use thousands of pictures to reconstruct) he could actually extract full 3d models and use it for the more wackier 3d camera movements or more complex lighting effects. For these dolly steady camera shots though, I find it perfect like it is.

Wow... very well done. Small improvement suggestion on the moonscape. You want to use a parabolloid reflector for that because there is no ambient lighting, no scattered light on the moon. You want those sharp shadows to be totally realistic... but this lighting sells the effect to the average viewer as well but for the more picky audience members will point this out.

Some incredible miniature work. I think the actual filming and CG implementation need some work to really sell them. Constantly using the same camera move (a push in) gets repetitive and draws more attention to the scale/detail in the miniatures. Films like 2001, Star Wars and Blade Runner would do long exposures for every frame so that the aperture could be as closed as possible to maintain as much depth and detail as possible to hide the scale of the miniatures. I have to point out the moon shot immediately drew my eyes to the fact you had stars visible on the darkside of the Earth, which should be pure darkness (because there's a planet in the way of the stars), then the Canyons was a little heavy on focus effects where the foreground is completely soft and the background is in the focus which isn't the way a real camera would capture that scene if it were real and to scale. When you have a lens focused to infinity for a landscape, everything from the foreground to background will be in focus, except for things right in front of the lens (like a meter or two max). The focal length will also effect this, where a wide angle lens has a sharp focus range whereas a telephoto lens will have a much more shallow depth of field. This isn't intended to be super critical because I envy his skills, but these are just some obvious places for improvement. I'd recommend shooting some real life sequences and make some foreground miniatures as set extension. That way you are using a real video you shot, opposed to finding stock footage to work off of.

All Art is merely an illusion, I once read somewhere and as a Commercial Artist of forty years, I tend to agree. I'm learning to make dioramas, of mostly Australian History, as a hobby nowadays and am like a cat at a fishshop's window when it comes to appreciating a vid about set making. Creating an illusion. I'm always inspired by them and I understand all the work the camera doesn't show. Like making fifty conifers that look like a forest and all the little details in scale, to trick our eyes. Bladerunner's set, in my opinion was the classic example of "less is more", using space to create the illusion, fooling our eyes to believe what we see. Thanks heaps.
