Hey man I like your content you have some great ideas. Another thing you could try is count up the character levels that your party has. For example a group of 4 level 1 PCs could take on A duo of Level 2 bandit brothers, Or a level 3 Barbarian War chief and his Level 1 archer rogue lackey. The only thing to be careful of in this method is the AOE spells. If you have a party of 3 like yours and you put them up against single a level 6 Evil Wizard (Or even a level five for that ) He's going to TPK Your party with a single fireball if they're closely packed. So like you said use that two level on the other side rule in combination with this method and put that same Level 1 Party of 6 PCs up Against a level 3 wizard , His Level 2 tank fighter bodyguard, And his level 1 rogue archer (with expertise in stealth of course So he doesn't get found and killed right away). To facilitate this method I keep a calculation in my notes that I call PSt (or Party Strength) sometimes at higher levels if I've given a character or two a powerful magical item that really Improves their Characters effectiveness I'll add a +1 to the PSt to compensate. For example I have a current game going on With 7 level 13 player characters That are quite kitted out with magical gear for a high magic setting campaign Each one of them has at least 1 to 2 attunement slots taken up. They just hit a PST of 100 even. They were super stoked and they know the system by now and One of them asked "dude so can we take out 100 level one barbarians lol" the other party members Gave him this Be careful what you wish for a look! But it got me thinking so I decided to do just that. We just finished freeing a mountain pass That was occupied by An army of 100 level one gnoll Barbarians! The players felt like powerhouses they got beat to hell but they all made it through it was a multilevel combat with javelins raining down on us from above , My entire box of minis was out on the battle mat, completely epic! Keeping that PST score made it all possible. They had enough HP for me to throw in a Ramped up CR eight gnoll Pack Lord With warlock levels At the end. Sorry this got kind of long just thought I'd put in my two cents great video man!
