How to create multiple branches for your fiddle leaf fig (ficus lyrata)

In this video, I'll share the steps to cut the top part of my fiddle leaf fig to stimulate new buds to grow. The final result is the growth of 7 new branches. They are still young and green , yet looks healthy.

terima kasih. I pruned the tops off a multi stemmed leggy plant . It has bushed out beautifully. It accidentally escaped through the holes in the pot …😳so now it is in my garden. It is a very fast grower so lots of pruning and propagating.

Hi. Thank you. To me its best to let the tree at a height of 5 feet and above for the branching. It gives more of a tree like shape. I would suggest to remove the lower leaves once you have got the branches at about two feet long. At that time you have lots of new leaves to support the growth and it looks more beautiful. The time depends on your tree growth. From a 1 feet tree, it might take up to a year to get to 5 feet tall.

Good idea. I usually buy a pre mixed potting mixture. It contains humus, burnt soil, coco peat, charcoal powder, burnt husk, natural silica grain. This mixture dries up water a bit quickly, but it suits my watering schedule and is good for the fiddle leaf fig. I might explain about the mixture and importance of choosing proper medium.

Salam Dr. Beginner here, so pardon my silly question. Why do some Ficus (like the ones you see on Pinterest) have no leaves on the bottom branch? Did their bottom leaves fall off? Were they pruned off (for aesthetic purposes etc.)? The reason I ask is because my ficus has leaves covering its entire branch. Just wondering if I missed the memo lol.

Salam. Yup. All of them (if they were grown from a small plant) started off with leaves in average 10 cm apart the entire plant (top to bottom). Once they have grown tall, and branched (either naturally or not), the lower leaves are intentionally removed. Once the stem becomes thicker, you won’t really see the part that initially were where the leaves came out. That’s why it somehow looks like is was originally without any leaves.

Kuning kebanyakan sebab kurang cahaya matahari atau nutrient. Boleh check letak di mana. Jika indoor, ubah kepada tempat yang bright indirect light. Kalau itu tempat terbaik buat masa ni, cuba bawa pokok ke luar rumah secara bertahap (mula kan dengan letak bawah shaded sikit tapi dapat sunlight). Beri masa sebulan untuk lihat daun baru tumbuh dan hijau. Dan yang kuning tak boleh ubah balik hijau. Pastikan perbaiki watering schedule dan letak baja. Ada dua jenis utama ficus lyrata. Tree form dan bush form. Yg saya bawa masuk dlm rumah tu bush form. Daun dia lebih rapat2 dan besar2. Cuma pokok saya lebih nampak rapat sebab arah daun yg membuka ke depan. Saya jaga dari kecil dan letak tempat di porch yg bumbung agak panjang. Jadi daun membuka menghadap cahaya jauh dari depan. Boleh tonton semula vidéo saya yang ni kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXe8hp2DfbZ_j5I. Lihat part tips pencahayaan. Saya ambil vidéo dari sisi belakang pokok menghadap keluar. Jadi boleh bayangkan sifat daun ficus memang akan bergerak ikut arah cahaya. That’s why banyak tips dari pemilik lain yg suggest supaya kita putar pokok sekali 2 minggu agar bentuk dia sekata. Saya tak buat sebab memang nak bentuk dia begitu. Ada sisi depan ada belakang.

Are you referring to air layering. If so, I personally haven’t tried. Yet I’ve seen others successfully doing it for fiddle leaf fig. Just that you need to use root hormone and medium with nutrients to expedite the process.

Hi. I’ve tried notching but had never worked for me. Maybe I didn’t get the method right. You can give it a try. Another method is aerial propagation technique but still you will end up cutting the upper part of the tree.

Hi! I have a small fiddle leaf fig and it's been slowly, but gradually growing. The only concern is that during the growth, the stem grew really long with new leaves at the top with the middle bare. It's not balanced out and I'm a thinking of cutting off the stem. But I'm not sure if that would be a good thing.

You might be able to make TWO plants based on the TWO segments. I'd suggest you try aerial propagation technique i.e create roots in the middle bare part. Once roots develop, you may chop of the two parts. Nevertheless, make sure that the lower segment also contains at-least 4 healthy leaves for it to continue growing.

If you have friends who have big ficus Lyrata tree (usually outdoor and planted on the ground), maybe you can ask for a branch cutting. It wouldnt hurt especially If they have lots of branches. Or you may purchase from any Nursery.

The brown/reddish spots are edema caused by the damaged cells (can be due to inconsistent watering). The white/light spots are due to spider mites infection.

Yes. It would speed up the process. I’ve never tried, yet there are others who use it and it works. I personally believe in allowing it to naturally grow. It works most of the time but needs about a couple of weeks max. Yet if you are doing aerial layering/rooting, it probably needs help from rooting hormone.

Wow! Did you do anything to get so many new branches?

I’m actually not too sure. I always practiced shaking the tree to stimulate its stem to harden. I can’t say it’s scientifically correct but it might somehow stress the plant to create a more balanced tree, hence requiring more branches. Trees grow according to its stressors and stimulants (light , gravity, wind etc) and I’m not too sure if that is the reason. Other than that, I’ve been practicing the norms of care.

Thanks for sharing. Everyone always says you need to remove all but 1 or 2 leaves when water propagating the FLF. But you're having success with multiple leaves on your cutting?

Yup. It works fine for me. I removed a couple at the bottom part of the stem. And left those that were healthy at the top part.

selepas transfer fiddle baru itu ke pot, kena sirim air berapa banyak? lepas itu berapa kerap siram air? tanah encik pakai itu macam boleh simpan air, jadi selalu basah. boleh kah macam itu?

Seminggu sekali siram. Tanah perlu pengaliran baik. Yang penting tanah apabila ia kering, kita boleh lihat ia tak mampat dan keras. Itu indicator tanah kita ada campuran compost, arang, cocopeat, dll yang beri ia ruang2 agar tanah tak padat. Boleh check setiap kali cycle siraman. Baru kita akan kenali jenis tanah yang kita beli.

Maintaining proper nutrient, light and water can sustain the growth of the leaves. If you see the bud/shoot start to appear, make sure you closely monitor its growth. If you have to bring it outside for a couple of weeks, they do so. Just make sure it is gradually taken outside for more sun (refer to my other video on ficus Lyrata care) to prevent sun burnt. When outside, water might dry up more quicker, so pay more attention to this.

@@AshrafRostam Thank you Ashraf for your reply. My ficus is currently about 1.5 feet tall. The main stem is only about 1 cm diameter at the widest part, which is just above the soil. At this height and thickness, is it suitable to cut to encourage it branching out to 2 more stems? I do not get direct sunlight AT ALL in my balcony, but it is bright. I have this for about 1.5 years now and its only about 1.5 feet tall. Is it too slow?

@@stevenwang6498 that is actually slow. Did you provide fertilizer regularly? Shaded bright light is still OK. But needs to give nutrient atleast once in 2 weeks. Water once a week , drain the water heavily once a month .

Hi :) tinggi mana suggest utk prune? Sy ada ficus umbellata yg tinggi lurus, takde branching. Sampai skrang tak berani nak prune sbb takut nanti branching tak cantik.

Untuk ficus Lyrata best untuk prune apabila tinggi dalam 5 kaki. Ficus umbellata saya tak pasti If it works the same. I cant recommend coz I dont have any experience .

Saya pernah tengok orang tumbuhkan akar dari daun. Tapi Saya tak pernah tengok ia tumbuh besar jadi pokok baru. Setahu Saya tak boleh. Dia mesti dari keratan batang. Kalau ada video yang berjaya dari daun hingga jadi pokok, boleh share link tersebut di komen. Saya pon nak tengok. Kalau boleh dari daun, boleh je nak share hehehe.

@@hatta84 dalam video yg English ni daun tak di propogate. Dia ada mention boleh simpan untuk kegunaan lain. Yang dipropogate semua adalah dari keratan dahan/stem. Dari daun semata-mata tidak dibuat. Perlu ada stem/dahan.

Boleh guna baja organik dan kimia. Both Saya pernah cuba dan berkesan. Saya sekarang guna baja organik (tiada najis) dan baja foliar (baja daun). Jika letak indoor, baja daun ni elok Bantu cepatkan pembesaran daun. Ia jenis liquid dan spray pada daun directly. Awal pagi atau lewat petang. Agar tak tersejat. Yang utama berkenaan baja ni ialah kekerapan. Pastikan konsisten baja 2 minggu sekali. InshaAllah ok.

assalamualaikum tuan, pokok sy agak sudah tua juga, kurang lebih 5 tahun, sy taknak buat repotting lg sbb duduk di kawasan rumah teres, jd taknak terlalu besar dah. skrg anggaran dah tinggi 10kaki. tp dibahagian batang dah tak cantik sbb dah byk yg gugur, mcamana sy nak pruning atas saja nnti akan makin besar, boleh ke sy cantas batang dia untuk pendekkan terus, dan jika tak ada stem lagi kt batang, adakah pokok akan mati kalau sy cantas ? sy sayang pokok sy, tp sy tau kalau prune hanya akan semakin membesarkan dia. 5kaki pokok sy hanya batang saja, 5kaki atas baru daun banyak. terima kasih
