Hello World, In this video I'll show you how to make realistic Plaid/Gingham/Tartan Seamless Pattern in Adobe Illustrator. we can't convert objects which are filled/made by pattern itself, that's why I exported jpg. Because expanding is unnecessary & very messy too.

Did anyone else have trouble getting the two white lines to switch to the new swatch and layer under the green lines? I've done it over and over again and when I click the lines and the new swatch nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

I think you have to "ungroup" after you divide. Unless im missing something, my black lines didnt separate with just a divide. Also after the transparancy to softlight, when you make a rectangle the diagnal lines do NOT change to black. Please show a full tutorial and all steps.

This tutorial is great! If any of you have trouble after switching to soft light, it might be because you're on CMYK color instead of RGB, that's at least what happened to me.

In 3:42 when it says to delete the necessary parts I can't select the individual shapes only the large rectangle I have just created?

set the habit of locking & unlocking objects. So Lock (ctrl+2) the object which is getting grabbed by mistake. and select unnecessary parts using *Direct Selection Tool* > Delete. Now you can unlock all the locked object by pressing (Ctrl + Alt + 2) Good Luck. :)

Great tutorial! Thanks! Suggestion though. When you click, it would be helpful to have the video show what you've clicked. It took me quite some time to finish this because I had to figure out what you did. However, I appreciate you even putting this tutorial up. One other thing, how do I make these swatches available for other projects? When I create a new project, the swatches I made (your pattern - different colors), have disappeared.

Feedback noted. thank you. To get the Swatches which are into Swatches Panel, first Group them into a folder. remove/delete unnecessary swatches. then Swatches Panel's Fly out menu Click on Export Swatch Library as ASE or AI. If you have any problem Exporting Pattern & Gradient, then I suggest to use Copy Paste that objects in desired another document. that way you won't have to do exporting process. I prefer this method for quick time save.

Thanks for the tutorial! Quick question: When I create the white rectangles and duplicate the line swatch, the lines default back to horizontal and the transform settings are not saved. When I go to angle them at 45 degrees again, the white lines no longer line up with the black lines behind them. Any thoughts on what may be happening or how to go about fixing it?

I'm having that same problem. Does your soft light transparency also look different? Mine turns green for whatever reason.

Make sure its above the green cover patch/shape. Blend modes work only if its on top layer.

I follow all the steps and at the point when I go to create the pattern and then deselect, I run into trouble. When I go to the swatch pattern my box is never centered. It is always defaulting to the right of the artboard. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Please help!

+RJayHickey On 03:13 I believe you chose wrong color or might have wrong layer order. So Just confirm your Green color with mine: #00B81E. And "Black" stripes above. Good Luck..

Use Global Swatch for changeable color swatch. Look, 0:35 and 5:24 and what do you mean by "aligning with previous pattern"? can you elaborate it?

Oh that one! If it doesn't fit by default, then you will have to move pattern manually from "Transform" panel. See 3:00 for example. there I rotated but you can move it too. Good Luck.

When I applied the pattern to the two white lines they were horizontal by default. Can you tell me how yours was automatically rotated? The first pattern was rotated correctly. This was a great tutorial btw, your channel is very helpful!

I am so frustrated. I love this pattern and have been trying for an hour to make it work, but I cannot get past the white rectangles. I get horizontal lines at 4:18 rather than angled ones, it's evident that you're pressing quite a few buttons that you aren't mentioning around that time. Can you please elaborate on what goes on between 4:00 and 4:20?

Patterns are not located in "Library" panel. They are in "Swatches Panel". Library panel is for Online Cloud Syncing.

okay, need help: not sure what's wrong with my illustrator, but when i draw the rectangles (at 3:40) i can't delete "unnecessary parts", it doesnt work. the whole rectangle is marked and idk what to do

Make sure you have divided the shapes as shown in the video. Divide button only works if shapes are overlapped. And at the time of deleting them, make sure other items are locked or hidden so it won't disturb the selection process. If these doesn't work for you then you can manually create rectangle shapes where they are needed. In short, you can skip "divide" method.

Why the hell do my pieces stay connected when I try and divide?! Around the 2:15 mark, some of my parts are still connected and I can disconnect them. What the hell. This sht is frustrating sometimes.

If you still haven't, I had to "ungroup" for some reason and then they were separate pieces. However, when I apply the "fill>pattern>basic graphic lines" it's giving me a grid pattern of lines instead of just horizontal lines. Little quirks between versions?

All Versions have the same pattern. So no chances of differences. First check the *panel name* after clicking on "Basic Graphic Lines". If that's okay than Maybe you are overlapping two patterns? If problem is still there, you can share me a snapshot using imgbb.com
