Thanks for the tutorial. Just a question on these, can these calibrations also be done using normal HSL tabs? Like reducing the saturation of blue and moving it to cyan, and changing greens and reds, can all be done as HSL. How is the calibration tool different then?

Calibration changes the RGB, hence the entire colour pallet of your photo. Meanwhile, HSL is used to refine the edit with changes to specific colors. I go more into detail on the differences in this vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYW5d3eNaribmsk

Awesome stuff, you got a new sub here :) Never done film presets but do regularly shoot analogue on a Hasselblad 500CM, if you put the porta preset and a shot taken on film would be hard to tell them apart. Potential giveaway would be the way the older medium format lenses render the image vs full frame modern lens but definitely going to give this a go :)

Every film shot you showed was a medium format film camera. That’s a huge difference in the look as well

Lighting conditions also play a role here. I shoot digital and analog and while I appreciate his work (he really knows what he's talking about) I don't think that you can create the analog feel just by slapping a preset onto a digital photo. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I've found a simpler way which guarantees me to get the Portra look. I grab my analog camera and load it with a Portra 400 or 800. And what can I say? It works. All the time.

But as I said somewhere below, it's rarely sufficient to use a preset to get "that analog look", because even the same film tends to look differently, depending on light source, time of day, lab development etc.

Is that not that I said in the video? That many factors come in to play that affect the final results in film photos 02:44 ? Also, I agree, as I say in the other videos of this series: analog to digital is not a direct comparison and viceversa. At the end of the day, people asked me for this video (that's why I made it) because they're interested in how to translate film looks into digital photography. Never did I say it's the exact same results, just my interpretation.

Remember that not everyone shoots or can afford film, so this is an alternative, but more so just an exercise to improve and practice our editing.
