If you want your status updates to go back to the vertical way it was, just unfollow all the channels. However, you still won’t be able to search though.

Another way to view a particular person’s status, since we can’t search anymore, go to chats and open the person’s chat as if you want to chat with the person, then tap the person’s DP. You’ll see the option of either view WhatsApp status or View display picture
