Great tutorial! I stitched on a sweatshirt decades ago. I remember stitching through the big holes. I guess because the directions didn’t specify where to stitch. The stitches were uneven. Also, I used an interfacing. The sweatshirt was kinda uncomfortable to wear if I didn’t have an extra layer (t-shirt) underneath. I didn’t wear it very much. With your tips, I may have another go at stitching on a shirt. Thanks!

Is there some sort of backing material one can use after completing the stitching and removing the waste canvas to hide/protect the back of the stitches and knots?

I would recommend fusible interfacing for backing material on wearable cross stitch. It fuses to the floss ensuring that nothing comes undone, and acts as a barrier between the stitching and your skin, which can get itchy depending on the type of floss (especially anything metallic.) Bridget and I frequently don't use any backing material when stitching on a t-shirt with cotton embroidery floss and ours hold up for years! So just wanted to let you know that's an option, too.
