Crochet it in the round. And add an absorbant filling. Fantastic idea.

I'm going to give my way ago and yours. I wish I had someone to test these. I'm sending them over to uganda along with some re usable pads. I wonder though about the cleaning process if in africa inserted sanitary options are not as sterile. Do you have any feedback. As I'm a boy and have no idea. All I know is my comunity over there needs something and I'm the crafty one. LOL any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great question! And how cool ur helping so much!! I find that baking soda and vinegar usually does the trick. Dish soap and hot water will work great too if you want something more aggressive. Bad bacteria smells bad, so as long as it doesn't smell they shouldn't have any problems.

PLZ DON'T DO IT, this is very dangerous and your putting them at risk, idc if you think "Crotchet Reusable Tampons" are safe, it is not fair to them that you will send these"tampons and pads" to Uganda without knowing if they are safe to use. If you want to helo them crotchet them a blanket or something.

What about toxic shock syndrome? I keep finding conflicting information about it and tampons regardless of whether the tampons are organic or store bought. Kindly share your thoughts and experience with me. I'm looking for a natural sustainable way to handle periods because pads always irritate my skin and cause sores and tiny cuts it's so frustrating.

TSS is caused by bad bacteria releasing toxins. This is mostly due to the tiny cuts in the vaginal wall that rayon tampons cause. If you clean the crocheted ones properly and make sure they don't smell at all when used again there shouldn't be any problem. Make sure you change them regularly. I've been using the crocheted ones for many years and I haven't had any problems. There's many other options that are better than traditional tampons if ur still concerned. The Diva cup, cloth pads etc.

TSS is caused by leaving a tampon in to long no matter cuts or no cuts. Tampons should be removed every 3 or 4 hours depending on your flow. Leave in no more than 4 hours. The make heavy flow and light flow tampons so that it isn't dry when removed. @@HomesteadingBarbee

How do you crochet pads ? Because I'm trying to figure out how to make them instead of buying them
@HomesteadingBarbee2 жыл бұрын
You can definitely make your own! Probably best to make it out of an absorbing cloth like cotton so you don't get any leaks. You can also buy reusable ones if you're not great at sewing. I bought some about 25 years ago and still use them today. www.amazon.com/Bamboo-Charcoal-Menstrual-Reusable-Sanitary/dp/B0736YKRRG/ref=psdc_3760941_t1_B01LXNFG4K

i wanna do this cos tampons give me horrible cramps. but i hate sitting in my blood with pads. but im worried abt the string breaking or not fully cleaning it properly. i’m a dancer so i need to wear tampons but bad cramps and tampons are not a good mix. also i know u said hydrogen peroxide but can i also hand wash them? and i have cotton yarn but idk if its “high quality” should i use it as a test run to see if i like it better?

Good yarn is cheap so just invest. You can use soap as well, just make sure to rinse very well. Good luck!

This is a bad idea. Detergents from laundering never come out completely, neither does all the dirt from usage, handling, other articles that had been in the laundry ect... Plus the crochet pattern is more abrasive than standard tampons. Tampons in general are designed to be a single use product. NEVER attempt to reuse them. If you want a sustainable product, try using a properly fit menstrual cup or disk or even reusable pads.
@HomesteadingBarbee2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for opening this discussion! I actually don't use detergent on them, and will make another video explaining how I properly launder them. I've used them for 15+ years and have experienced only positive results. The organic cotton that I use is actually much less abrasive than the rayon used in traditional tampons. The fact that they don't smell and store bought ones do, means that there is much less bacteria.

You have been misinformed and should do some research on commercial tampons and the problems they cause. If one is worried about anything being left behind, they can boil for 10 minutes to sanitize their tampons. I crochet mine in the same manner as in this video, but I do not sew it closed, that leaves it able to be unrolled and, in my opinion, able to be more thoroughly cleaned and dried. Cared for properly, reusable organic cotton tampons are a very healthy alternative to nasty disposables for those of us who cannot use cups or discs due to rectocele, cystocele, and prolapsed uterus.
