Whoever asked the question about Amazon. You would do KDP AND a Kickstarter. Kickstarter gets the money in your hands right away but Amazon keeps it selling.

Hi, I’ve been trying to find some ideas or guidance about this online but can’t seem to find any easily. I basically just want to use Kickstarter to make people aware of my book instead of necessarily sell it via Kickstarter (which basically means Amazon or some other alike won’t be able to print and distribute my book, take on all the logistics and complexities around that). Do people on Kickstarter do something like that? Is it a thing where authors have a link to an ordinary Amazon print (with no extras) and then also maybe offer some more special copies with extras (mainly print extras, but maybe other merch alongside) on Kickstarter? I basically don’t want to sell via Kickstarter because it translates into me doing a lot of logistics like collecting e-mails and addresses, sending books manually by post (and dealing with associated costs of sending it to other countries potentially), packaging, checking that the payment has gone through etc. - all of that absolutely boring stuff for someone who actually just wants to write books all day.. 😅

@@thegoodthebadandtheugly579 did you ever find out an answer to your question? I am in the same situation.

@@Dice-Gamble hi, yes, I did find out, but you won’t like the answer 😂 In short: Kickstarter is useless unless you’ve already built an audience who are willing to buy your product. Kickstarter does 0 marketing for you basically so if no one has heard about your idea, Kickstarter won’t help with it. In addition to this, Kickstarter is full of scammers who claim that for $100-200 they can promote your product and get people to see it. These are scammers who basically take your money and put into Facebook, Reddit or other ads. You don’t need these people and you can set up a Facebook ad account yourself. The problem with those ad services is that whilst people get to hear about your product, to sell it (specifically when it is a book) is near impossible unless you are Stephen King and the like. I’ve managed to sell only two copies of my book and it wasn’t via the ad services but was because of some people I know from real life. Passive marketing services like the ad services on Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit, Amazon etc. are ineffective for new authors basically. And you can spend loads of money to get views and clicks on your ad and webpage but you won’t get any buys.. unless maybe your book is a non-fiction self-help guide or something (which some people buy cuz they think they will get rich that way). For fiction books, those methods don’t work. The KDP thing on the other hand does deal with logistics such as printing and mailing your book to whoever has bought it on Amazon, but it charges you so much that in those initial first days you might as well do it yourself. Basically for a £9.99 book you get only £1.60 and you may have to pay taxes on that £1.60.. but there is a bit of a workaround which is - you can order author copies from Amazon which are cheaper because you don’t pay royalties, so there you get something like £4.50 a £9.99 sale, but you will need to type in each and every individual address yourself in Amazon, so there’s a bit more logistics. It’s not scalable that way but may be a better option in the first days when you don’t have many readers and you may want (or may need) to build a more personal relationship with your readers anyway (you may need to build that to sell your book anyway, cuz as I have mentioned it, sadly they don’t sell themselves even when you have a great cover, a cool idea, a marketing strategy etc.). Good luck, buddy! I hope you have a different experience than me cuz mine has been extremely disappointing. What I’ve learnt is: you might as well sell other people’s books, cuz sadly the book business is dead and no one seems to want to buy any new books by new authors. Unless you are J K Rowling or you have support of a big publisher (which I have no idea how you can get and by the time you get it, it probably isn’t YOUR book anyway, the book business is dead..).

About the supporting merchandise, I have ideas for making wall art of the Maps of the world my story takes place. but all the print on demand services i am looking at charge way more for the product + shipping than i think is worth it. By that i mean, if the poster + shipping is $35 then in order for me to have the reward perk listed so that i can actually use the money to help fund the costs, i will have to set the perk cost to like 50 bucks. is there a better way to do this so that the reward is more cost effective? charging the back more for a poster or a puzzle than the actual book, feels like a scam
