The Sheet Metal Kid We added 2nd floor living space over our garage and a utility room. To start the project we began by upgrading our HVAC to two systems (a split system in the attic for the second floor and a gas pack outside for the ground floor). We are at the point where I'm ready to connect the duct runs to the plenum that my contractor prepped in the attic. Unfortunately, my contractor has had some personal issues come up and won't be able to help me for a few weeks. All I have left to do is cut a hole in the plenum, install a start collar, and then connect the flex duct. Although I have to buy the needed tools, I'll be taking care of it this weekend.

Thank you. I own an older (89) large double wide and am replacing ductwork in spots that have rusted out due to condensation. Of course that was due to insulation that was torn down by critters. Thanks again!!

I started out with what I refer to as "right/red" and I refer to them as right because it requires the right hand to use them effectively, even though they cut to the left.....been cutting sheet metal for over 28 years and have been using straights solely for over 25 of them....the rights and lefts just can't compete in my opinion overall for production work from a right handed person's perspective.............update.......today though I'm actually doing something outside of my normal trade.....duct work and I was cutting 8x6 holes for take offs.......I used a pair of red offset.....man was I wrong compared to what I use in my trade (metal framing/straight is the way to go for sure) but with duct work and cutting in a hole like in this video.......offset snips slay my straights hands down......3rd house I've run my HVAC in and I don't know why I haven't tried these before now!

I used scribes to mark holes, and use tin hammer/flat bar center, then left snips bend strip over, hold on to it and cut along line pulling up as I go,done. Certified sheet metal fitter. 1976 we only used metal no such item as flex ductwork.

How does one cut a hole on the top of a main duct, if the main duct is hung up on the ceiling? There's not much room between the floor joints it sitting against.

crabjoe get a pair of right cut and left cut 90 degree offset snips. they fit right into extremely tight areas.
