Hey Whitley, I’m sure you get this all the time but why not just use automotive paint instead? I absolutely respect what you do on here and understand that not everyone has access to professional spray equipment. If someone absolutely must rattle can their paint job then good results can be achieved doing it this way but cutting and buffing a full vehicle is a back breaking job lol. A gallon of single stage can be purchased online for around the same $160 price. You can probably even find a basecoat/clearcoat kit for pretty cheap. Do you have any videos where you spray automotive paint? Keep up the good work teaching all the DIYers out there, much respect 🫡

@christrainor1129 Yes I completely understand and agree I'm just showing people different ways they can do things for different price points and just trying to keep interesting I have many videos doing automotive fixits and full paint jobs if you want to take a look at some of my other stuff but for some reason Rust-Oleum is something a lot of people are interested in so I kind of go with it lol Thanks for watching

Looks a lot better and great intro to buffing! What caused the orange peel to begin with? Possibly to much thinner? It appears to be tedious and time consuming, I think the first thing I would do is figure out what went wrong with my calculations so I could correct the orange peel to begin with. Of course, I don't have any idea how to do that.Thank you Jonathan for your time and money making this video!
@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS

That's a great question Orange peel typically is caused by the paint drying too quickly and not having enough time to lay out properly and in this case by too much heat and humidity in the air causing it to dry virtually as soon as you spray it so the way you prevent this is not paint on hot or humid days and be sure to use a slow activator to give the paint time to lay out before it dries Thanks for watching

Im going to try the interface pads on my air orbital with 1500 grit on the large panels next time i do this.
@Spiritof_76
@Spiritof_76 2 ай бұрын
Using a pneumatic palm sander with wet-dry paper and going up through the grits (800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000...sometimes 3000) makes this work quicker and easier if you need to do a whole car. Of course some people don't have an air compressor. I've never tried it on Rustoleum, though.

If you get a chance, I would like to see and or know your thoughts on denim buffing pads. They are supposed to remove orange peel without color sanding.

Thanks for the video bro! What’s your opinion laying bondo down over bare metal. How do you prep the metal? I’ve seen guys do fiberglass resin over bare metal and I actually have metal to metal bondo covering a large dent in the roof of an old truck I’m working on.
@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS 2 ай бұрын
Yeah I've seen people do it all different ways I mean honestly I just typically sand it down with at least 180 grit if not more aggressive Like 80 grit then just make sure everything is clean with a general wax and grease remover and lay on the filler then sand it smooth as normal I've seen other people do it over primer but I've always done it over metal and never had issues if you have any other questions feel free to ask anytime Thanks for watching

Do you have to go back over it with clear or is it done after the polish I’m restoring my 1979 Camaro and I’ve been watching your videos on this for help
@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS
@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS Ай бұрын
Yes after polish you are done unless you decide to ceramic coat it or wax it which does help preserve the finish but isn't 100% necessary and if you're not happy with the finish you can always go back wet sand with 600 grit and re clear coat it Thanks for watching

i don't remember what clear you used but as much peel as there was my first cut would have been with 600 with some dish soap in the water then hit it with 1000 or 1200 with plain water and a final light cut with 2000-2500 and soapy water again then a good rinse and dry then hopefully there would still be enough clear left to buff......

Is the reason there was so much orange peel in this one is because it wasn't thinned enough to flow out? I know some people do 4:1 but I think 4:3:1 paint, acetone, hardner does a better job with less orange peel.What's your thoughts. I watched a lot of your video's and you are an expert with rustoleum in my opinion. My bad, it was the clear that orange peeled. Same question.
@WHITLEYAUTOWORKS

Heat and humidity was the cause of all the orange peel nothing to do with anything else really. Normally I would just wet sand it back down and flow coat it but we have other plans for the car so stay tuned Thanks for watching

It would get a little shinier but the orange peel would still remain honestly best to go with a little more aggressive compound and polish than I used in this video Thanks for watching
@robertfontaine3650
@robertfontaine3650 2 ай бұрын
Why do you move up in grit before the orange peel is gone? After you get the orange peel out with your first grit you are supposed to use each progressive grit to remove the previous grits scratches till it's smooth enough that your cutting compounds can take it up to a high polish. You can get a better finish with less work if you check the tds for the compounds to check what grit to switch at and remove the orange peel before you progress with the higher grit papers.
