I think the short part of the sleeve will be sewn to the back not the front, going by your final statement. They compensate each other.

Do all the calculation I'm sure you can't get anything lesser than 4-5inch, I follow the same process and I always get the same result, so I'm more of practical cutting now. Sorry I did not explained
