The colours in Fluorite are so unique within the world of gems. I wish it was a easier gem to cut and polish, else it would be right up there with the favourites of gem cutters. Cheers

I purchased some nice Blue Fluorite crystals from eBay a year ago or so. I put one nice piece in my cabinet (collection) and saved 2 big chunks for faceting. Knowing that it is soft and has multiple cleavage plains and because I've heard it can be finicky to polish, I have not yet found the nerve to start cutting it yet. But now that I have a full 12 months of faceting under my belt, I think I have the confidence to at least give it a try, without having great expectations. If it turns out well at all, it should be beautiful because of the hue of blue that it is. Thanks for this upload Cliff. I'd gladly watch another episode of you cutting Fluorite again. I don't recall seeing any other episodes with Fluorite since I started following you last December.

I would avoid cutting too much Fluorite. It's too soft and scratches easily once faceted.

@@VintageTimeGems I agree. At best it's "evening wear". I still haven't found the nerve to attempt it yet (2 years after my original comment ... 4 years after you posted the video). I am tempted to do it soon though. I do want the experience whether it's a good one or a bad one. There is much to be learned .. such as never doing it again likely. lol I think it's good to experience as may types of material as possible just for the experience. Thanks for all you do Cliff. :)

Very nice gem! Also, could you include a rough estimate of the value before and after cutting? I know that can vary a lot, but it would give an idea for those of us not gemologists

It's always difficult doing a estimate. There are many factors the cost and rarity of the rough material. Also the time spent cutting a gem. As a baseline it will cost $30 a carat to cut most gems like Topaz, garnet, citrine amethysts.

Yep, the colours are great, but Fluorite is a real pain to facet. If Fluorite had a mohs hardness of 8-9 and no cleavage, it would be an elite gem.

Very nice could you tell me what you used for glue and what you used to remove it from the dop.

I use Devcon two part epoxy and heat the dop up with a small hand held blow torch to remove the dop.

Hi! New to faceting here and I love your videos. Question... is the girdle a little thicker on this gem than usual? Or is that in my head? I ask because I'm a rockhound and have quite a large, gorgeous specimen of Arizona fluorite (where I'm located) and I'd love to try my hand at a faceting a piece of it. I'm wondering if you intentionally left the girdle slightly thicker than usual for strength purposes. Or did you just stick to the diagram and I'm going crazy? Lol Btw, thank you for your videos. They've been immensely helpful in my journey of self-taught lapidary arts. With covid, I haven't been able to join a gem club. Everything's been KZbin, books, and google! Xoxo

The girdle can be made thick or thin. On fluorite is chippy so a thick girdle is better.

Thanks for your video Cliff. Today I was having a lot of trouble polishing fluorite. Can you make another video about it ? Can you use other polishing materials instead of diamond (cerium oxide , tin oxide etc ) Why you are using 14000 diamond grit instead of 50k or 100k .

I hope someday to find a gem cutter willing to cut some of my rough fluorite. I have some nice pieces and I hope they wouldn't cause a cutter too much trouble. I also have a lot that I have no idea if they could be cut or not. Any pointers on finding out what gems can and can't be cut?

Very nice faceting and the end product has awesome color. Question: Why the small Table? Wouldn't a larger Table give more brilliance?

Yes it has small table. That was the size on the design. If I cut it down more I would have trimmed off some star facets. Shame that fluorite is not a real brilliant gem.

Hey Cliff, great video again. Just a question., you cut the first set of pavilion facets and polished, then went straight to the girdle facets and then back again to the pavilion for the rest of the facets. What was the reason for that particular order of cutting and polishing? Thank you

Probably no real reason. Most likely testing to see what polishes this type of material.

I haven't been able to find a whole lot of resources showing what to do, but I've read that it's water soluble. The dust also contains flourine, something that's very toxic to us if ingested or taken in otherwise. Is grinding it and grinding it in water at that dangerous? I've been curious if sanding it while submerged in isopropyl alcohol would alleviate the issues.
