Miss Dunstan is brilliant. It's difficult not to respect her skill. I was a manager of a frame shop years ago. She makes it clear how ignorant we were trying to pass ourselves off as professionals. That shortcoming lead to my resigning. I knew we weren't up to the task. The company kept taking orders. I asked for help when we were fifty orders behind. The company said to keep taking orders. I said we need skilled help. The company insisted we keep taking orders. When we were 472 orders behind, they sent us one semi-experienced man with an attitude the size of Texas. He wanted my job . I let him have it. Last I heard, he was asking the company for more help. They were 602 orders behind. That's when my friend Rita quit and two others. I wish that the internet was as accessable then in 1997. I wouldn't have been so ignorant.

Does choosing that cutter depends on types glasses to be cut?
@creativeglassguild2 жыл бұрын
Not generally, these will cut most glass, you may need something different if cutting very thick glass (>6mm) these cutters work on pretty much every type of window glass or stained glass provided its not toughened - which you can not cut at all!

Great, thanks. I believe something you forgot to mention is that, as I could observe in your video, when you cut a straight line you move the cutter towards your body and when you cut a curve you move the cutter away from your body. Is that correct?
@creativeglassguild6 жыл бұрын
In reality you can do either, with a curve, certainly away, if you are following a line, so that you can see it, with straight lines against a cutting edge you can go either way.

Nice demo. Could you do a demo where you cut the circle but need to leave the square pane intact on a small piece of class maybe 350 x 300 mm with a hole about 200 mm diameter. I had to supply a timber frame and cut the hole in the new glass for an expelair.Tried the one time then ended up at the glaziers. He told me to leave it with him. I suspect so he didn't give any clues away! Thanks again.

On cutting circles.... We should avoid small angle points to prevent nibs. Nibs are hard to eliminate because it will leave an ever smaller nibs. Best to exit radially perpendicular to the arc.

Question 1. You appear to be using a carpet square or something similar. Is that absolutely necessary? Question 2. When do you use the oil?
@angelherrera48555 жыл бұрын
The oil is already in the cutter imagine a pen with ink inside. Now if you don't want it leaking just dip in oil before cutting.
@creativeglassguild2 жыл бұрын
A short pile carpet or rubber backing helps, especially with the pressing technique, we use the oil in the cutter itself to lubricate the wheel and prevent rust.

Your video is soo helpful!!! Thank you, But I have a question that I hope I could have an answer for, is it possible to cut a mirror if it's glued to a piece of wood ??
@granth19056 жыл бұрын
No but you could try removing the glass from the wood using a wire in between them using a sawing motion. If the glass is thin which it probably is or it is epoxy glue or even just well glued it will most likely break the glass. The only other option is using a diamond grinding wheel which would also be very difficult considering that you would be cutting through glass and wood.
@creativeglassguild6 жыл бұрын
No, if glued on it wont cut

Just a quick question about the oil used in the glass cutter, does it have to be a particular kind? I bought some "Professional Glass Cutter Oil" on Amazon and just recently watched another video where they said you could also use motor oil, or transmission oil in the cutter. I am just getting into working with glass, so any tips are appreciated. Thanks!
@creativeglassguild6 жыл бұрын
We recommend glass cutter oil www.creativeglassguild.co.uk/prod/glass-cutter-oil as it is the right consistency for the wick in the glass cutter, other types may clog or run right through.

Hi Lyn, we would recommend a Toyo Cutter www.creativeglassguild.co.uk/prod/toyo-super-glass-cutter-tc1 they are great quality tools, getting the balance of pressure right takes some practise, also check you don't lean left or right when scoring, that will mess it up.
