Shannon is a DIYer's best friend! If he wasn't a contractor he should be a teacher with his clear, well thought out instructions. He doesn't leave out the basics because he is talking to people who have never done this before. Those of you who constantly need to comment "you should have..." need to understand that. I'd love to see any of you do half as well. It's not easy talking to people who have little knowledge of the subject ...take it from a 2nd grade teacher! Excellent as always, Shannon!

Just got done installing soffit, facia and siding on my 1500 sq. ft. house. Thanks to Shannon it came out great. His tips saved the day. My only challenge was trying to find nailing edges sometimes and little weird places I had to create custom solutions.

My dad would have used an angle finder. My father was a master carpenter with lots of years experience. I really enjoy your videos and consult them when i do any work for myself or friends. I also direct people to your site for getting to know "how to" info before they hire a contractor. the angle finder is a simple piece of plastic/wood handle with a medal blade with a pivoting wingnut. I would show you a picture, but i don't have a picture of it.

I love this guys videos'. I watched this video 3 years ago when I did siding on my shed I put in, now I'm watching again for siding on my screened in porch. Just clear instructions, walks you through it completely. I watched his soffit/fascia video. Wrap video. Couple others. And there isn't a ton of fluff. Straight to it. I don't think he's making a ton from these videos. But man he's a saint and I appreciate these videos.

Siding is easy. hardest part is to miter a bunch of J channel under elaborate Ceilings of patios. Sometimes you gotta angle a piece and such. that's soffit, not siding btw.

at about 10:00 mins is the most brilliant and accurate way to find the angle. thanks for the great tip.
@thereallifeofboredom7151
@thereallifeofboredom7151 7 жыл бұрын
No it's not, what you could do is measure your siding . example . If your siding measures 10in (height ) measure from the jchannel to the siding that's already installed to 10 (height) , put your tape straight exactly at 10 , then mark it. Okay next step. Measure to 20 exactly at 20 then mark it. Okay from the first mark to the last mark you made measure it . Let's say it's 24in in length , you measure a scrap piece of j or siding measure to 24in and cut it in half , length wise height wise maybe about 2in or doesn't matter just cut it, doesn't have to be exact either . Okay so you put that piece on the siding from the factory cut to wherever (the piece you made ends) put it under the furring and boom. That's your angle buddy. It seems complicated because I'm saying it without you seeing how it's done but if your interested in this kind of stuff message me or sub me and I'll make a video just for you 👍🏻
@DHislife
@DHislife 7 жыл бұрын
actually it really is easier at 10 mins. i guess not understanding how it works. at 14-1/8" marks the point at which when the siding is popped in is 11-5/8" in height which I believe is the sized sizing he is using. Its really quite the most accurate way honestly. Its geometry. Pythagorean theorem, ever heard of it? I understand what you are saying. You attach a piece, then take another piece, stick it in the angled j-channel and transfer the angle onto the horizontal clipped in piece. This might be faster but it is extremely inaccurate. Causes you to need to cut and trim. I had a kid who insisted on doing this method, claimed he was the almighty and would get it perfect every time. I told him you won't and what do you know. He had to fit it in place, trim, fit it in place, trim it. At least 3 times until he got it right. The method in the video is the method I support because you can't go wrong with it. If you like the transfer angle method and it works for you, then okay. But I am saying it is not totally accurate.

Hi Shannon. I've just done exactly this on my house which has three very steep gables plus a shed roofed dormer. There are far too many goofy angles on my house, some even reverse angles that follow the top of the roof slope. This is what I found worked well after hours of trial and error. This might be hard to explain but, hold your work piece up there as you are at 4:42. Tack the work piece so your hands are free. Get another piece of siding, maybe 12" to 18" long. Hold up the scrap piece at an angle up into the gable J channel. This will give you the angle you can then scribe on your work piece. Since you already know the tip of your work piece will go into the corner, just line up that with your scrap piece and mark the work piece. Cut and install. Once you've done that once, you should have a triangle piece you can then use to cut all your angles from then on...no measuring involved at all.

An easy way to do the slope is this... after your intial above the corner piece to the gable end. Take a scrap piece of siding or cardboard and line it up along the gable end. Next take a small level and horizontally draw a line on the bottom. You have a pattern for both sides.

Good "old school" video. Quicker way would be to use a scrap piece and run it parallel with your gable angle. Another quicker way is to cut a template with a scrap and use it to transfer your angle. This can be done on the left and right end of your siding piece.

Your videos on Vinyl Siding are great! I am attempting to install vinyl siding for the first time tomorrow. Am looking for a video that covers how to install Board and Batten siding. Particularly cutting and placing so that they are evenly spaced at each end when finished. Do any of your video cover Board and Batten.Keep up the amazing videos!!
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 9 жыл бұрын
TheMarykim I do not but I can give you an example. If you are using 7" siding and your wall is 216" long. Divide 216 by 7 gives you 30.86 pieces . So figure how wide .86 of 7" is (.86 X 7=6.02 ") Now take 6.02 inches divided by 2 to figure out how wide each end piece will be. So that means each end will be 3" to start with. Now for me, anytime the end pieces would be less than 1/2 the width of a full piece I would add half of a width to those pieces so they are a little wider because that usually looks better. So in this example I would cut my first end piece to 6.5 inches and start with that when I get to the other end of the wall it should work out to the last one being the same or very close. Hope this helps.

I would make a template by sacrificing one 12 ft piece once you get under 12ft you could trim part of the bottom to make the overlap slide easier then cut the angle on both ends and then cut in half to overlap in the middle, then you could just pencil mark in the middle at the proper fit and transfer to the finished piece and keep shortening the template by cutting off mid sections as you go up..probably wasting material if your a professional but for amateurs that would likely waste materials and time anyway, this would guarantee a perfect fit

The piece you cut off at the eleven minute mark can be used as a template for the rest of the pieces going up. It is also faster to cut two or three on the ground and carry them up with you so you're not wasting time climbing up and down the ladder. You can just slap 'em in and nail. That J corner needs to be fixed. The overlap should come from the top channel. Quality always comes first.
