I recently helped a friend do soffits on a wooden shed. We used a cordless angle grinder with a thin kerf abrasive metal cutting disc on it. Worked like a charm, without the hand fatigue that a lot of snip work could cause.

Nice job. Thanks Shannon! I like the in-depth videos like this one vs. the garage and bathroom videos you did recently where all of the work is done off camera and the videos are just short recaps.

Straight and to the point! Was going to use a framing square like always but seeing how slick your jig worked...will make one with a back-stop instead. Have entire house to do and will speed things up. Great vid!

Cutting soffit right in the box? I knew a guy who cut sheets of plywood with a chainsaw. He said that it gave the subfloor character and texture. It’s no wonder that he later lost his contractor’s license!

I know this isnt relevant to this video but is there any chance you could make a short video on how to remove pieces of wood from a wall at a T junction where the two walls meet without damaging the plaster/dry wall?? I have taken down a wall in my home using your wall removal video but I have one beam left that is connected on the wall, cannot remove it without damaging the plaster and would ideally not like to or with minimal damage, thanks

A third method with vinyl soffit (maybe aluminum too, but I haven't tried it on aluminum) is to use a utility knife guided against the edge of a framing square. It must be a new blade, but it cuts quickly, cleanly, and quietly.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 3 жыл бұрын
I think that could be a little difficult at the ribs but I use one for cuts across the panels for sure

Does anyone know how far can aluminum soffit span without additional nailing strips. I have a 36” overhang and wondering if I install aluminum without nailing strip
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 2 жыл бұрын
Most recommend fastening every 24". You get some rattle and movement if it is not and risk of panels getting damaged or pulled out. I have gone as far as 30" but never more than that.

What is the cutting edge with the blade in backwards? Would it be better to draw the saw towards (blade in standard) you so that the cutting force is down?
@lexboegen
@lexboegen 3 жыл бұрын
Putting the blade in backwards is because this material you are cutting is so thin--paper thin. When cutting with any saw, you want several teeth to be in the material at any time, but with something this thin that's impossible. The teeth will grab the material and deform it. Running the saw with the teeth facing backwards means it's impossible for the teeth to grab and lift the material, so it won't be deformed. Try it both ways on some scrap soffit and you'll see for yourself. Even a fine-toothed plywood blade will work better when mounted backwards for cutting soffit.

The easiest way is to turn around the blade on your mitre saw if its big enough to make a cut that wide
@joshuamills2868
@joshuamills2868 10 ай бұрын
Everyone uses these. Why not just use your miter saw with the blade reversed on a stand that has extentions?
@trustme7731
@trustme7731 3 жыл бұрын
I don't like it. I don't see how you can make an exact cut when you have to eyeball the pencil line with a slot in the jig which is much higher than the piece.
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 3 жыл бұрын
Cut your sight line larger if you need to . Once you have a cut mark in the jig base you line it up easily to that.
