Here are my tips and tricks to help you with cutting straight. You need to cut straight to prevent your blocks ending up too small, or wonky and out of square. Despite all your ironing attempts, and time spent on sewing straight, it’s essential to also have accurate cutting.

I always wondered how they made quilts before we had rulers like we do. I can't imagine having to draw with templates on everything I make! Massive respect to my Grandmother!!! Also, I don't think I would be able to cut fabric while sitting down. I have muscle memory for standing up while cutting and I think if I had to sit down, that would be a giant list of challenges!! For the first time I experienced what happens when your blades stick together and you accidentally put two in the cutter.....I really liked that fabric...grrrrrrr.....This was a fantastic video and one I have been waiting for while not knowing I was waiting for it! Thank you Karen!! I have learned sooooo much from you!!! :)

5th requirement for accurate cuts in my craft space - no cats on the cutting table. 😆Thanks so much for the clear and complete instructions, Karen. Although I've been sewing on and off since I was a teen and have made my own clothes and costumes, quilting is a different type of sewing and I am finding your instructional videos extremely helpful and useful. Also love that you are a fellow Canuck. Suggestion - making a playlist of the various instructional technique videos you have done. If it exists amongst your playlists, I couldn't find it. Thanks again!

ty for so many great tips! I have been having prob getting material square, followed your tips all except the putting tape on back of ruler. MISTAKE as I was cutting, ruler slipped and I am thankful it was an older blade or I probably would have cut my finger tip completely off! So on my 70th birthday I got a very bad cut that bled every where. very deep cut that should of had stitches, half a bottle of liquid bandage, ruined fabric, and no quilting for at least a week I learned my lesson, and will use all your tips and tricks.

Hello from the UK. Thank you for all your wonderful advice. One tip O have picked up is, when using my long ruler, I have attached one of those self suction shower grip handles so that I can keep the pressure on the whole ruler whilst cutting. It helps me.

OMG!! Gold!! I am just under 5' & my reach & arm strength are not enough to make good cuts. Your hint about using a weight on the end of the ruler is absolute gold!! I have only sewn EPP, all by hand, in the past so accurate cutting wasn't necessary; just gentle mushing here & there. I picked a simple pattern to make my 1st "real" quilt. BUT realized I had no idea how to make accurate cuts, sew straight seams & iron properly. BUT I have always believe time spent prepping on the back end make the front end so much easier. Your trifecta vids are wonderful! Short, simple & to the point. Lots of great examples. I have adjusted my stance & replaced the blade BUT the weight at the end of my long ruler is the VERY best. I have ALWAYS had issues with the ruler moving due to my height & short arms. I have placed sandpaper dots on the back & done everything I could think of to mitigate it BUT I still could not get it to work!! With the weight it works soooo easy!! Like you, I am using a 5 lb dumbell hand weight. It has the added benefit of being covered in a rubbery material to improve grip when working out, BUT that also keeps it from moving. It also makes it so much easier to match the markings on either end of my of my cutting mat. The weight is heavy enough to hold the end BUT light enough so I can tap the edge to fine tune it to the ruler lines. Just amazing!! THANK YOU!!!

Fairly new quilter here. My problem is I have a hard time adding pins to my pieces. You make it look so easy! I try to place them but it seems like i'm not able to put them in without moving the material out of place or it lumping in the area the pin is in. Too tight, I'm sure. I can't find their happy place so I sew squares (or whatever) by eyeing it. It works but not always. Is there a tutorial? Or am I the ONLY person that can't get them in?

I'm puzzled by what you mean when you talk about rulers with a "ledge" I don't see any ledges on my rulers, nor any on the ruler you showed in close-up when talking about it. Nothing at all rsembing a shelf or other horizontal surface sticking out from any of the surfaces. I've rewatched several times and, from the context you're using it in, I'm guessing that you mean the thickness of the ruler's edge....? Have I got that right...? I've never heard of thickness or depht being referred to as ledge, so it's puzzling me. Thanks

Hi Karen, thanks so much for this, clears up a couple of things for me. I have a question, though. The biggest problem I have with cutting strips along the width of fabric is making sure the fabric is folded in half squarely. I have found several “ dog legs” in the fold area as I didn’t match the selvedge edges correctly. What am I doing wrong? I have a weight & really good tools, but getting frustrated with this. I would love any suggestions you have. Thanks! Kathy.

The blade is on one side and the nut and washer on the other. It does not matter if the washer is up or down. My screws are fit on both sides but one way screws on tighter. Put the blade on the side closest to the ruler. So if you are right handed that's on the left, left handed on the right

I buy a little extra fabric if it's yardage and cut a couple inches off the top and put it in a scrap quilt of 5"x1-2" pieces. It helps so much because once one tiny (usable) cut has been done the fabric isn't "perfect" anymore. Also fussy cut rulers are the best. I love them. It makes cutting fabrics like Tula Pink's big designs justifiable.

I will add one tip I have found that works for me. Now, in my old age, I am not always seeing so well which line on the ruler I need to follow. When I am cutting many pieces in a row that all have to be the same size, I put a little piece (or 2, depending on size) of painters tape on the lines on the ruler that I need to follow. This prevents me from misreading the lines on those one or two squares that may be the last 2 pieces I have in that color! Saved me many times.

I’m working on a quilt now that I’m having issues with. The blocks consist of 4.5 inch rectangles and 2.5 inch squares. I meticulously measured and cut every piece. I have a 1/4 seam allowance foot on my machine and still my pieces don’t match up perfectly. I am wondering, though, if the difference in the fabric itself can cause problems. The prints I am using are of a heavier fabric and feel thicker than the background solid, which feels somewhat thin and flimsy. All my fabric is top quality, name brand, designer quilt fabric bought from a quilt fabric store. I have 58 years of sewing experience, so I know how to measure, cut and sew fabric. I cannot figure out why my blocks can still be a bit off.

Pls. clarify rulers with 1/8" ledges. It seems that even the provided links are just flat (unledged) rulers. Reply

Yes, love the Martelli products and use those in my studio. The non-slip backing means those rulers never move when cutting. I've found that my cutting accuracy has improved a lot by using their products.

When I change my rotary blade, I take a fine point Sharpie pen and write the date on the side of the blade. Then there’s no doubt of how long it’s been!

Love your videos! You provide good tips and reminders. I have started ironing my fabric before I cut it so that I don't need to worry about slight shrinkage when ironing after piecing, especially when mixing different fabric brands.

Could you do a video on folding your fabric for cutting!? Example, cutting a 2.5 inch strip out of a fat quarter. No matter how good I think I've folded it, it always seems to come out a little wonky!

I know this video is a couple of years old so I hope you see this message and respond. I love the tips on this video but my question is, how would some of those tips apply when you have to cut while sitting? That's my biggest issue. Thanks❤!

I need a video ASAP on squaring up a quilt so I can put my binding on. Seems the top is a bit longer than the bottom and the right side is a bit shorter than the left. Ever happen to you? Most videos I see are just squaring up squares, or a table topper sized quilt. I need to see how to square up a real, life-sized quilt! Do you have a video and I just haven't found it? Thank you so much! Love, hugs and kisses!

Hi! I am not a quilter and I have a negative relationship with my rotary cutter. But I do use it for crafting and sometimes for garment sewing . Yesterday I used the cutter for the first time after watching this tutorial. Your advice re posture, stance, arm motion and grip made my cutting much easier and physically more pleasant. Thank you for all your encouraging words across all your videos. Your clear, to-the-point presentations are a breath of fresh air. Sometimes I listen to you without regard to topic just because I need an emotional boost. Think of that! You may be putting therapists out of business across the land! Thanks, Karen

I still have that problem of cutting. I believe it's my fault, my cutter, I went to change blade, I went to take it apart and each piece fell out of my finger. Just like my bobbins. I can't hang on to them. Lol.

I’m wondering what sizing or starch you use. I use Mary Ellen’s best Press often,, but I know in the states it was possible to buy sizing in the grocery store. I can’t find it here. I’m in Toronto so I’m wondering where you buy your supplies? Thanks.

Cutting mats can be refreshed by soaking it in 1/4 cup white vinegar per gallon of cool water for 15-20 minutes. I used my bathtub as it was my biggest space. However: don’t skimp on your rulers or your mat - save up the extra dollars and invest in quality from the beginning; it really will pay off, as Karen said.

A lot of useful tips again, which I did unconciously right or not at all. It doesn´t help though, when you are making faults in counting and then get nearly all blocks from a bit wonky to half an inch too short . Now I have to be creative. :-/

I discovered that when i veered off near the end of my cut, it was because I was looking to where my blade had been. I achieved accuracy when I intentionally looked to where I was going. And keeping my ruler on the mark I intended. Instead of slipping aside.

Excellent video, cutting straight is a skill I'm working on, the thing that I am unsure of is how to straighten fabric that is either newly purchased or perhaps is a wonky scrap...folding with and/or perpendicular to the selvedge....

I've tried quilting off and on for decades, but you just gave me the best explanation of how to cut pieces accurately. I'm off to try it, and with your tips, I'm pretty confident. Thanks for that detailed, clear explanation. I'll be watching more. Cutting has always been the hardest part of sewing for me.

Thank you, thank you for these foundational skills videos; I'm just getting underway learning to sew a flimsy. I thought to grab my low cost fabrics (thrift, left-over, old shirts, pillow cases) and try strip piecing "like on KZbin". I tried the "8-at-a-time" HST. Wow! It's very easy to be all wonky. My cutting is sliding, my 1/4 seam is leaning, my fabric is puckering a little. Well, on the "not precious" fabric to play, that's fine. I'd be upset if this happened on my favorite print fabric. Here's to learning, and becoming skillful for quilts. :)
