I always wondered how they made quilts before we had rulers like we do. I can't imagine having to draw with templates on everything I make! Massive respect to my Grandmother!!! Also, I don't think I would be able to cut fabric while sitting down. I have muscle memory for standing up while cutting and I think if I had to sit down, that would be a giant list of challenges!! For the first time I experienced what happens when your blades stick together and you accidentally put two in the cutter.....I really liked that fabric...grrrrrrr.....This was a fantastic video and one I have been waiting for while not knowing I was waiting for it! Thank you Karen!! I have learned sooooo much from you!!! :)

I will add one tip I have found that works for me. Now, in my old age, I am not always seeing so well which line on the ruler I need to follow. When I am cutting many pieces in a row that all have to be the same size, I put a little piece (or 2, depending on size) of painters tape on the lines on the ruler that I need to follow. This prevents me from misreading the lines on those one or two squares that may be the last 2 pieces I have in that color! Saved me many times.

If you don't have a hand weight you can use a bag of rice - that is what I use. It is enough weight to keep the ruler from shifting. This video is great - it helps so much to understand what works and why.

OMG!! Gold!! I am just under 5' & my reach & arm strength are not enough to make good cuts. Your hint about using a weight on the end of the ruler is absolute gold!! I have only sewn EPP, all by hand, in the past so accurate cutting wasn't necessary; just gentle mushing here & there. I picked a simple pattern to make my 1st "real" quilt. BUT realized I had no idea how to make accurate cuts, sew straight seams & iron properly. BUT I have always believe time spent prepping on the back end make the front end so much easier. Your trifecta vids are wonderful! Short, simple & to the point. Lots of great examples. I have adjusted my stance & replaced the blade BUT the weight at the end of my long ruler is the VERY best. I have ALWAYS had issues with the ruler moving due to my height & short arms. I have placed sandpaper dots on the back & done everything I could think of to mitigate it BUT I still could not get it to work!! With the weight it works soooo easy!! Like you, I am using a 5 lb dumbell hand weight. It has the added benefit of being covered in a rubbery material to improve grip when working out, BUT that also keeps it from moving. It also makes it so much easier to match the markings on either end of my of my cutting mat. The weight is heavy enough to hold the end BUT light enough so I can tap the edge to fine tune it to the ruler lines. Just amazing!! THANK YOU!!!

I never got the notification for the Jolly interview! Now I have something to listen to while I work on my quilt today, yay! Karen, thanks for all your tips! I used to cut on my dining room table until I figured out it had a sway across the length. I didn't know why my strips were not quite straight, and a quilt sandwich I had rolled onto wood planks and basted by hand didn't turn out very flat. Now I cut (and roll) on my granite countertop in the kitchen and all is well. (My sewing triangle is very large!) My last comment is about starching. I had never tried it before, but I love the improved accuracy. I have been making flying geese, and there is literally nothing to trim but the dog ears. I may not always do this because of the time involved, but it sure seems worthwhile.

Great info, I always learn something from you! If you don’t have a five pound weight, look around your kitchen for a substitute. I use a 1.82 liter plastic bottle of tomato juice, works great. If I drink the tomato juice, I can fill the jug up with water. Happy quilting!

Thank you for this! I am a lefty and realized that I was holding my rotary blade was backward! I can’t cut straight with scissors as is and I am trying to take my sewing skills to the next level

The only thing I dislike about quilting is the cutting part 😫 I‘m going to try to keep your techniques in mind, next time. And maybe I‘ll be able to learn this „cutting Yoga“ and have clean cuts at the same time. 😉
