Thanks for the effort you put into this. I found my solution another way, I discovered the Logan Mat Cutter system. It's basically a long rectangular particle board with a long ruler covering the entire length. Alongside it on the board is a parallel guide bar, with a border measuring scale, so if you want 3" or 35mm you set it first, the put the board in for marking around all four sides. Once all the lines intersect, the supplied bevel cutter can be used. This has a small alignment line on it and you put that line onto the closest pencil line first, then press the blade down, and move the cutter along that long aluminium bar ruler. You stop when the line on the cutter reaches the line furthest from you. I admit it was NOT easy to understand, at first, but after one or two experimental cuts, it is actually very simple. You just need to stay focused, make sure you mark up correctly, make sure you use the start and stop lines accurately, and use an adjustment screw to stop the cutting blade from cutting too deeply - it should ONLY JUST get through the mat board and not cut the slip board which you place underneath. Have a look at the product video to see how it goes, remember the guy doing the demo has probably cut dozens of mats, and be prepared to invest a little time in getting the hang of it, plus two or three attempts. You should be fine after this. I wouldn't attempt to cut one the way you do now, I wouldn't be confident of keeping the cuts straight or not damaging the edge, or wasting a large mat board because of a small slip. If you're going to cut more than a dozen mats a year, this Logan thing is well worth it. I have an old model I got cheap on eBay, the 301-s which is no longer sold. The model replacing it is the 301-1 but the older model is actually better. Hope this helps and I have not caused any offense to you - just trying to help people who may not fancy trying to cut with a freehand cutter. Thank you.I have a Logan 301-s that I bought on Ebay years ago,and I still didn't dare to even open the box.I have only used the small,hand held cutter,which I also bought with no luck.

I realize the last comment was a year ago, hoping you’ll still see this. Budget is embarrassingly tight but, prints are stacked.. they need protected. Cal St Art online has taken me for so much to date. I’m sorry but I couldn’t hear what brand or where to find the mat cutter. Volume uncut mats are easily found & from what you’ve shown (thanks kindly btw), believe a double matte should be simple enough with double sided tape.. if safe to use. Any big box hobby store like Hobby Lobby or Michaels sell the mat boards. Additionally, local art stores sell them as well. Worse case scenario you can find them online through a lot of framing shops.

@@BiggerThanTheThreeOfUs A low cost sound dampener are soft blankets/quilts. You can try putting around the three sides of your mic (or camera if it's the internal one) that aren't facing you. It's likely you are in a fairly large room with mostly hard surfaces, so you can also try to close yourself in with softer materials without them showing in the frame or blocking your light.
