Your enthusiasm for something 50 years old matches it for something 200 years old. Fascinating and wonderful stuff

Thanks for this video. I am also in love with this lamp. My parents used to have one, sadly it broke. I am now looking into buying one for my own home. I agree that its such a timeless classic design.

So many versions it’s easy to get confused

I think I recall Sapper explaining in an interview that the stick is NOT for moving the armature. It is there to prevent the bulb/the armature from starting a fire when the lamp would accidentally be lowered onto e.g. paper.

Another great piece of education. I've learnt more about classic items from you, Steven, than any of your peers 👏👏

Great. Thank you. This is the whole purpose of my channel; learning, hopefully with some fun along the way too

I think the "handle" may have been added to assist with moving the lamp's position, but it's primary addition was (from what I've read) to prevent fires (and lawsuits). I was always mindful of this on my "pre-change" original design 1988 or so Tizio in San Francisco because of the potential for earthquakes, and it must have been an issue for any cat owners as well. I love the design to this day and the fact that it's assembled with "jacket snaps" at the bends and the electrical current runs from the base through the lamp itself, not through hidden wiring. The only thing that ever "aged" that 1988 lamp was the silvery rods across the joints eventually corroded slightly with the moisture in the air in San Francisco (and my propensity for having the windows open daily, since the high humidity of the fog in the city made it appear warmer than it really was -- and I always woke up feeling great there, as a result). I've just decided to get another (2023) and it will be here Wednesday. I ordered the Tizio 50 Classic (original design and size version) with the halogen lamp instead of the LED version. I see Tizio makes the original halogen version or their version of the LED for a jump in price, but these days there's also the option to simply replace the Tizio's bulb with an LED bulb (though the light won't be as bright and there's a chance the lamp may hum if you do this, or so I read). The company I bought mine from doesn't even sell the different LED version of the lamp, it simply gives you the option for a halogen bulb or an LED bulb (which appears to be a generic bulb, not Artemide's version). One of the things I loved about the Tizio was it's very bright white task light, so what I wanted was what I already had, not the LED version. I also read somewhere online the LED version comes with a GREEN on/off switch (I haven't seen an image to confirm) and I wanted the original red. As a bit of trivia, IBM hired Richard Sapper to design the original IBM ThinkPads (now made by Lenovo), and it's for this reason they were black with red details, even though IBM was called "Big Blue" and I always thought the little "mouse condom" rubber cover for the mini tracking button in the center of the ThinkPad keyboard should have been blue, but Sapper designed the original ThinkPad after being inspired by a Bento box, and IBM wanted it to share the Tizio's black and red look originally.

I am enjoying your videos tremendously. May I suggest though that you correct the sound? Sometimes it is hard to follow. Anyway, they are great. Keep them cominc.

Is the size of the head of Tizio 35, than the larger 50? Thank you

Keeping in mind that it's been a long time since I bought mine, but I _think_ I bought it before 1990 (my girlfriend who I met in 1990 confirms I had it before then). I don't recall it having glass, but I seem to recall it having the stick with red ball at the end. It could be that I'd seen the stick in photos before I bought it, and mine was from pre-1990 stock and did not have the stick. I've always assumed it did have the stick and I lost it, because it's just a tiny bit out of balance, and I have kept 2 large paper clips hanging at the end to compensate for the missing stick. I haven't used it for quite a few years because it developed a random flicker. I'm now finally going to take the base apart to see if it's a bad transformer, then try some electrical contact cleaner on the joints to see if I can clear up the problem.
