But that's usually how it goes when you are reading novels set in our world. Accepting magic as part of escapism is natural, while a lack of the stuff that is usually expected to be somewhere due to experience etc. Is usually off-putting. (Your comment might just have been supposed to be funny. If that's the case, nvm)

@@alexanderpohl9277 Yeah, I was being a bit facetious. I'm exactly the kind of person who complains about how Pegasus would be kind of difficult to ride, actually, because wouldnt your legs get in the way of the wings? Me too. Usually friends in books are low-key bitches, or they are ignorant of the dangers their friend may find themselves in. It also works in the sense that the main character is ignorant of her friend or insults her subtly throughout the book, so just for this change from the usual, I am also considering reading the book, if perhaps books with sex, shapeshifters and hate-to-love relationships aren't generally my cup of tea.
@PassTheMarmalade1957

@@js66613 "Friends" in romance books specifically tend to serve as shippers for the main couple or as a source of tension in the romance, e.g. the friend who doesn't approve of the douchebag love interest but then turns out to just be jealous that the love interest is "taking her friend away from her." The fact that this book seems to feature a friendship that's genuinely just a good friendship makes me want to read it even more than the cool supernatural concepts.

I love Molly Harper’s books. They sit in the perfect space between wanting the fun of a romance novel but also having some actual world building and plot. Her stories always have a mystery to be solved along with the romance which makes the whole thing more engaging. If you want to extend this paranormal romance to your lost in adaptation series may I recommend “A Discovery of Witches”?

I jumped on this upload like a rabid ferrit jumping another rabid ferret (tranlation: excitedly) molly Harper is an even more prolific writer than it looks like because she has a pen name she writes under too. All of her books are fun, and funny, and full of geek culture and dr who references. The sex is always there but it never - I feel - gets in the way of a good STORY. (( AND amanda rinconi who does All her audio books is fantastic, which a great range of voices for characters))) Thanks for reviewing this! There are I think 5 music bayou books now btw, and the halfmoon hollow books are funny as heck. Shes really good, also, about cameos from previous known and loved characters in the new books of a given series. You see Jillian and Bael again in each other book, and generally as more than a walk on. The focus is always on the new books pairing, but they dont exist in a bubble.

One thing though: of all the romance books that play up the jealousy and possession themes this is the ONLY ONE in which it makes a little bit more sense since Bael is a fkn hoarder, constantly battling the need to hoard. Jillian doesn't put up with it too much either so it's her arc as well not to be treated as a "thing" to be possessed.

Shifter romances make more sense than werewolf ones, IMHO, as shifters are more in control where werewolves go crazy every full moon and could eat you and not in in the sexy way. Still, I prefer vampires.
@UltimateKyuubiFox
@UltimateKyuubiFox 4 жыл бұрын
Traditional werewolves have all the thrill of a traditional vampire, with the added bonus that they actually don’t want to hurt their lover and are afraid of changing. It has all the angst of a vampire dynamic but without the constant emotional abuse and manipulation tropes since the bad stuff only happens out of their control once a month and the relationship can develop healthily outside it. You have a powerful monster with primal instincts that can kill its human-form’s lover, but maybe it won’t. Maybe said lover can stave it off. There’s a lot of room for romantic and sexual tension there in its basic form, which was very quickly mined for all it could be.

Thank you so much for telling me about a romance novel that doesn't rely on toxicity and abuse that the women either just put up with or react favorably to in order to facilitate drama. I don't care if the main man is a literal shape-shifter. I am going to buy this book and hope the rest of the series doesn't go too badly. You are, without a doubt, my favorite book-to-movie reviewer and give me a sense of sanity when I buy a romance/fantasy/sci-fi book that is PRESENTED as respectful that goes off the rails almost immediately into spectacle for spectacle's sake on page fifteen. Good writers exist, good adaptations exist, and I trust you to let me know which they are. Now and forever your fan. If only I could find someone like you to compare video games to their sequels that doesn't scream - 'It's different so it sucks' - to the heavens like an atheist in a world with literal Gods begging to be hit by lightning...

When it comes to the romance novel fanbase there are pretty much two camps (referring to your question around the 10 minute mark.) I would say a large number of romance novels are as "surprisingly good" as this one (not a majority, but there are so many romance novels a percentage being good means that a lot are out there that are good) and a large number of romance novels readers only set out to find books like these, while being disappointed when the books turn out to be trash (a common phrase in the romance reader community is DNF, did not finish, meaning the book got so trash you gave up on it) and there's another group who will read anything as long as there's hot sex and alpha male. I recommend you got to smartbitchestrashybooks, a book review website that gives a lot of insight into the romance reader fanbase.

Dom, I listen to this about a year and a half ago and had this in the back of my mind when I started collecting my audible titles! I'm so happy that I listen to you! It was such a good read! And it actually kept me awake at my job (Night Watch on a farm)! It gave me the same vibes as the Dark Hunter series. It doesn't drown out the rest of the story with just its smutty romance (which honestly is like my candy and I love that stuff) and it balances out the world building of the other mythics! Again, very much like the Dark Hunter series, which if any of you like vampires, werewolves, Greek Gods, the Bayou setting, and romantic smutt, give that series a go too! Thanks again, Dom! Much love! Also I'd love to get your take on the Dark Hunters if you haven't reviewed already!❤
